Fabulous book, love the new characters. Only disappointment is that Ive now got to wait for next book! This is a series of 17 books(So far) and the whole lot are excellent and well worth reading over and over again.
You would think after 17 books the story would be getting stale......NOT the case at all. The pace and tension is increasing and the only bad comment I have is that I can sense the end of this saga fast approaching...and while I cant wait to find out what happens, I also dont want it to end.......
This one starts with John, Rachel, Dog and Mavis, a girl he and Rachel have adopted. Mavis is an aboriginal girl who saved Johns bacon when they escaped to Lucas's place deep in the desert. She also has uncanny senses when it comes to direction and which way they should go. Its a native thing and she's damned good at it.
Rachel sends Mavis to Ziggy so she can speak with John. She's worried about how the virus will affect him. His eyes are red and John knows he has added strength, hearing and abilities. Now John is ex Delta, the Unit. He's been all over the world fighting wars. When he retired he and his wife Katie lived in Arizona. Katie and he finally reunited only to have her die. Its something John is still dealing with. He had rescued Rachel on the first day of the apocalypse and she has been with him ever since. She loves him and always has. It was a long time before John finally slept with Rachel.
Whatever is going on with him it cured his bad eye and John feels great. Rachel spoke with Joe Rivard, the Doc and he wants John back in Hawaii at his lab so he can examine him and try to figure out what's going on with John and the virus. John isn't eager to be anyone lab rat and Rachel is pissed about it.
Back in Hawaii Admiral Packard has survived the attempt on his life. He's in bad shape and both West and Black know someone high up in the food chain ordered the attack. Black is met by a Russian woman who passes him a thumb drive. She tells him she's Russian but isn't in with Boronov or his craziness.
Igor and Irinia are on the Key West a sub that's headed back to Hawaii to drop them off. The Captain is less than thrilled to have Russians on his boat. Strickland the SEAL who survived with them is also aboard. The Captain gets orders to meet a Russian sub and give them both Igor and Irinia. Its a command the Captain will disobey. He also knows something isn't right with those orders and he knows the sure as hell didn't come from Packard people.
John and Lucas head out in Lucas's plane to investigate a huge dust cloud. As they approach they see it thousands of kangaroos all following one another and headed for Lucas's place. As they had back John, with his super sight, sees something writhing all over the house. Its bats. Thousands of bats.
So begins one damned fine read.
This one has John, Rachel, a Rachel who John knows is pregnant, Lucas, Ziggy, the kids, Smythe, a Smythe who won't survive, a Lucas who is bitten by thousands of bats, the bats that won't touch John, a John who gives blood to Lucas. a Lucas who survives with Red eyes like John, Nadine, Igor, Irania, a US sub that stops the Key West, a Captain who head over to explain, Black and his Russian woman who end up together in her safe house, a John, Rachel, Mavis and Dog who make it home, a John who gives blood to Packard, a Packard who makes a complete recovery and John Chase and those with him doing their best to take out the bad guys, survive and stay alive.
This series has been excellent. I almost fear it every time I see a new one of these pop up, because I know I will become engrossed. These books have given me far more respect for special forces operators than I ever knew was owed. It has broadened a lot of my understanding of military procedures (which sounds less cool and fun than it actually is). Most of all it has commanded a lot of respect for the genre. Zombie suspense novels saturated the market for a while. To a lesser extent, they still do...but, this one is a gem.
The characters are fantastic, engaging and three-dimensional and I truly care when they are in danger and am truly gratified if and when they reach relative safety.
I cannot praise these books enough. Dirk Patton is a hero on and off the field of combat and his character, John Chase is absolutely and completely enthralling. I must know what will happen to him and his band of brothers (and sisters).
All the stars. Full Bird Colonel rating. Amazing series. Highly highly recommend to fans of the genre and all who enjoy good books.
Well, giving todays attitude on the Russians. It’s totally plausible as to what they are capable of doing. Anyhow, the admiral is back in action and Igor and Irina are on the beach. The major is now a colonel and shit is about to get real.
