Holy Smokes.
ANYthing Jim Butcher puts out is solid gold. Between the well written action, the compelling character growth, humour, and overall world building this is one of the best series I've ever read. I will continue to devour any text he puts out and highly highly recommend that everyone with even an inkling of an interest in high fantasy to have a read of this or his other series The Dresden Files. I have just bought the Aeronauts Windlass, and the first 6 chapters fill me with the same overwhelming joy and drive to learn more about this story.
I've read alot of fantasy and Sci Fi books and count Jim Butcher as one of my top all time authors.

For 1,000 years, the people of Alera have united against the aggressive and threatening races that inhabit the world, using their unique bond with the Furies - elementals of earth, air, fire, water, and metal. But now, the unity of the Alerians hangs in precarious balance. The first lord of Alera has fallen in his efforts to protect his people from the vicious attacks of their enemies. Now, the fate of the Alerians lies in the hands of Tavi, a young man who must use all of his courage and resourcefulness to save his people.

I finished Academ's Fury, book #2 in Codex Alera. I would give this book a 3.5/5 but am rounding down to 3/5 for Amazon.
I really liked the first book. I liked the story and characters. The second book is more of the same but lacks the epic feel. In fact I would argue it is a fake epic with a political aspect to the book and plot line that is sometimes uninteresting or lacks the weight the author seems to want to give it. (minor spoilers ahead) The First Lord falls into a coma and the entire book revolves around the idea that if the leader of this country dies the entire world will erupt into chaos. I didn't really buy it. There have been stories/plots in this series that weren't entirely believable and this one just didn't work for me.
I enjoyed the characters again although the writing for female characters like Isana and Amara isn't always so good and get repetitive. These are strong female characters and yet they tire quickly and are also quick to cry. That makes them weak, not strong like the author wants us to believe. The use of watercrafting to impersonate people also stretches the limits of things.
At the end of the day I think I will continue with the series but this book was a downgrade in quality imo. Felt more YA as a result. This is largely a fast action ride in a different universe but I think I will read a deeper fantasy book next with more substance before I continue.

Another solid entry in a great series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on April 24, 2017Verified Purchase
Second title in a series I demolished in short order. Much like the first, its not quiet as heavy as many other Fantasy series, but that makes it a nice pleasurable read.
In this we see one of the main characters, Tavi move to the big city. As a result we see a new fresh setting, new set of struggles and as before, Tavi relying on his general skill and prowess while being at a disadvantage by not being able to craft. This is interesting to the norm of the primary antagonist being all powerful.
As before, there is a element of the Roman Empire underpinning the series and this brings with it all the political intrigue of the time (or maby I have watched too many things on the Roman empire and think it was all like this) either way we see multiple people with multiple agenda's working in the background and the great thing is, most these characters do get some fleshing out over the series also.
In all another very solid entry into a solid series, you will soon find yourself on the third then forth book and so on in short order.

The second book in a fabulous story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on March 2, 2014Verified Purchase
Young Tavi is away from home and in training to be a Cursor where he daily has to use just his agile imagination, (no special abilities like the bullies and establishment) to get out of tricky situations, to save the Capital and the people he cares about.
As always Jim Butcher fills his stories with exciting content peopled by a really wonderful and engaging supporting cast - every character is fully formed, so that we know and care about how they survive the trials he presents them with.
A fabulous read - that makes you preorder volume 3!

Certainly worth a read for any fantasy fan

Jim butcher may not be the best writer but he can certainly tell a good story!
We can all relate to Tavi in some way or another and the story of Alera is certainly one any fantasy read should have on their list. Easy reading ams gripping enough to make me complete 4 books in 2 weeks!

Fantasy at it's best

When you begin reading fantasy as I did over 30 years ago you quickly get through all the regular writers and then you have to wait until another one is published.Well I missed this writer and am now making up for lost time. He allows you an indepth knowledge of the multiple characters and the way they grow and develop with umpteen diverse adventures in each book. I would suggest you start with Codex No 1 book I did and am half way through No 5 and will be starting the dresden Files as soon as I complete the Codex.
