Hygeia, an outer rim colony, is doomed as the moon on which it was built hurtles toward an inevitable collision with the dead planet Hephaestus. When a distress signal arrives from a Weyland-Yutani biowarfare outpost near the colony, a desperate plan is launched to evacuate the trapped scientists and colonists. Their destination: LV-846, a key United Americas colony where high-level talks are scheduled to address the galaxy-wide hostilities between the colonies. Once there, the evacuees, including a contingent of Colonial Marines, discover a plot that could plunge the colonies into all-out war. After the debacle of Colony War's "Brexit in Space London" , the lacklustre alien-free Inferno Falls and Vasquez's 400+ page novel where only around a quarter of it actually contains any Alien action (and even then it's muddied and rushed, but I cover that on my review of that book), Enemy of my Enemy is a good, solid step in taking the series back to basics; Alien research, company dealings and a spattering of acid blood is enough to (hopefully) get the series back on track.

The characters we're supposed to like are likeable; the shady ones not so much, giving a strength to the writing that has lacked from the last few offerings.

While it may still suffer from the "this is a character from a previous story", it's not as in-you-face about it being a descendent of Ripley and honestly, I hope to see more in the series from this author, though I'm not sure if that will happen - Unlike the early novels where they were all done by the same authors with only some variance in them, a lot of the more recent ones don't seem to get a return gig (with a few notable exceptions). Hopefully Mary gets the chance to return to this universe.

Now normally I love a good alien novel. There's a colony or ship, someone encounters sn egg or an experiment goes wrong and alien stuff happens. And it's a great formula if written well. In this story's case, not so much. The writing is wooden and the prose grey. There are also a lot of lore issues and baffling moments, like nobody knowing what the aliens are one moment then it turning out everyone already knew about them and had even had training. Also the writer for some reason has a mom human spawned alien having fur and acting like it's host in mannerism as opposed to how any alien acts like an alien regardless of host and had the same 'general' appearance. The characters are also sadly flat and predictable. It's sad that after a return to the form many fans love it was just so poorly executed. It sadly felt more like a fanfic than an official novel.

This book is a return to form along with Vasquez after the awful Colony Wars and Inferno's Fall The first book had Eastenders and trumpton references which were ridiculous and tried to change the aliens biological make up Which I hated The second book had the authors political agenda in it I don't need that Where as Mary Sangiovanni's book had a good story and the aliens behave like the aliens from the films The characters are likeable and interesting Even the minor characters, she has really thought about the characters The book is exciting with good descriptions I hope she writes another book in the alien universe I would recommend this

I'm a sucker for the Aliens novels and this one I would put in the top third of the ones I've read. Unlike some other later works in the Aliens universe, this one doesn't go in for topical social issues - it's a straightforward action/adventure/horror. Nice and gory, with characters you care about. Sometimes the prose is a little clunky and overripe, but the plot kept me engaged.

Alien: Enemy of my Enemy is the best recent release in the "Aliens" universe. It's an Aliens story that focuses on the ALIENS. No ham-fisted modern politics, no beating the reader over the head with an agenda; just a group of survivors bring pursued by a relentless killing machine, and their party dwindling over time.

The characters are fleshed out and feel like actual characters. There's a strong female lead who earns her spot as the hero, a cast of Colonial Marines who fit the bill as the "ultimate badasses" until they're not, and a group of supporting characters who you will quickly grow attached to, and then have your heart strings tugged at as they are picked off one by one.

Enemy of my Enemy is easily my favorite of the newest releases of the Alien series over the recent years. I hope that we see more work from Ms. Sangiovanni in this universe in the future. Well done, Mary!!
