About Allen Sports
Dick Allen (pictured left in 1972) started Allen Sports in his garage in 1967. Since its founding, the company has been committed to producing the highest-quality, easiest-to-use bike racks and bicycle related products on the market. Dick, a onetime aerospace engineer, opened Allen Sports after building a prototype bike carrier in his Lincoln, Massachusetts shop in his free time. The first ever trunk-mounted bicycle carrier-made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding) - was refined on weekend excursions to Cape Cod. Shortly afterward, Allen took his design to market, and by 1971 had established a national presence for his product.
Today, the family owned company operates four warehouses nationally, six factories abroad, and sells products in countries around the world including USA, Mexico, Canada, and China.

Update: I loaded it up with 5 full-size (27.5”) mountain bikes on 4 trips in the past month. Each trip involved about an hour of driving. Bikes were secured with two extra rubber straps and they didn’t shake. The straps (not included) makes a big difference as they keep all the bikes secure.

REVISED REVIEW: All of the above holds, with two exceptions. First, this is not really a rack that will hold five bikes without wrecking your paint. The brackets to hold the first bike closest to the car are almost unusable. Second, over the space of two summers (May to November) the rack has rusted at the welds. My guess is that it will not have a lifespan greater than five or so years -- once the rust gets worse, I would not trust its integrity and safety. I bought this Allen rack because it was the only one I could find during the great bicycle rush of 2020, although I now wish I had bought a Yakima or Thule.

The rack has a series of quick release features. The tilt back to access the hatback is nice. However, the quick release to lower the arms is, completely ridiculous. When the arms of the rack are out it is a truly nice set up. Everything just clicks into place as the arms are raised. I like this feature. But...
Here is why I gave it only 3 starts. When the arms of the rack are lowered so they don’t stick out, the arms rattle and swing slightly like a wind chime in a thunderstorm. The arms don’t, for some reason, have a second set of holes for them to lock in place and hold them steady when they are down. They rattle, and clank back and forth at the slightest movement of the car. This is such a rediculous over sight that could be fixed with a simple set of pin holes like the ones that secure the arms when they out in the carry position. It’s hard for me to believe this got through any testing phase or cunsumer demo and feedback phase without this coming up over and over again. Just disappointing to see such a nice bike rack with such a glaring mistake/oversite in its design. I’ll have to use a strap or bungee cord of some kind to keep it from driving me nuts. Other than that, a good, solid bike rack.

DO NOT BUY it if you are planning to carry e-bike.
This racks Absolutely cheaply made with cheapest possible materials. People, who are saying that it’s well made don’t understand anything in engineering. Poorly engineered - weegles everywhere, bicycles jumps on it up and down and back and forward. Thin steel made of. Simple stupid engineering mistakes drives me nuts. Allen - you could be better than Yakima but instead you just made a rack - simple rack. Not adjustable at all. Locking mechanism is a joke on a thin threaded rod. Bike holding Rubber bands doesn’t hold bike even close to well. NO VERTICAL BIKE HOLDER Used it exact for 1 time (see pictures how bad it is!)
The bike holding bars started bending after first travel around 30 miles on ideal german autobahn. 5 bike rack with only 2 e-bikes without battery lol. And by the way see the clearance!!!
RETURNED THIS PIECE OF AMAZINGNESS and bought right after a KUAT NV 2.0 (expensive as hell but worth every penny!!!)
P.S. We not that reach to buy cheap stuff…
