YIKES! What happened to prices since I bought this thing? Understandably, they rose significantly. The XS1300 I learned has an easily replaceable battery - one that simply slides out, and snaps back in. You can even replace the battery with the power on. So rather than spending over $200 for a similar UPS, I researched the next best option: replacing the battery. I figured even if I managed to get to 10 minutes of backup power, it would be a ten-fold improvement from the 1 minute I had with the original battery.
Although the 7 Ah battery was recommended for the XS1300, I spotted the 9 Ah version: the APCRBC124 by Schneider Electric. I reviewed the comments, and saw that people reported it fit into the XS1300. So why wouldn't I opt for a higher capacity battery?
The APCRBC124 arrived at the happy speed of Prime shipping, and snapped perfectly into the XS1300. It had a QC slip taped to it, reporting that it had been tested recently this year, 3 months prior. It was reassuring that the battery hadn't been sitting in a warehouse for years. After an overnight charge, the LCD still estimated "1 min" remaining of backup time. So I decided to do a test. With all devices plugged in, my power consumption rated between 60-85W, which was ~10% of the load that the unit said it could supply. I set Amazon Music Prime on loud, so that I could hear when the music stopped. A solid 1 hour and 16 minutes later, the UPS turned off and beeped, reporting that the battery was drained. This morning, after an overnight charge, the unit is recalibrated to the new battery (more or less). It's telling me that I have 13 minutes remaining instead of 1, which is more than the 1 minute it reported before - but I know the truth. I have over an hour of backup power, which means I could finish the lecture and even entertain some questions. Mission accomplished!
Bottom line: if you have the XS1300, or a UPS that fits this series, I recommend this exact battery.
By lower quality I mean under "zero load" (aka nothing plugged into it) the available time on battery is much lower than the old battery I got directly from APC. The other one that has become defective it worked for a couple of months but now there's a "battery" warning flashing on the LED display. I just took out of service for now and it's less than a year old.
I wish APC would put a tamper proof vaccum seal on their batteries so that you know they haven't been used. So an unscrupulous seller can't be inclined to sell you a used battery. It's alot of money to spend on a battery and it shouldn't come with the worry I've had to put up with.
I'll be buying my APC replacements directly from APC. I won't be buying replacement batteries through here ever again.
UPDATE Heard nothing from APC but I decided to do my own test on the battery. It now looks like the issue is not the battery itself but my UPS battery self/manual test. I unplugged my UPS and left my computer equipment running consuming 70 Watts. The UPS indicated 60 mins operating time left and the Power Chute software was set to shutdown the computer when 5 minutes operating time was left. Everything worked out perfectly with the shutdown occurring after 55 minutes operation, turning off the computer and the UPS. I plugged in the UPS and started things up again. After allowing the battery to come to full charge I performed a manual self test and the battery passed no problem. I'm happy that the battery is OK but have a suspicion that the battery I replaced may have been fine because like this one it was failing self test. My advice to anyone with a battery failing self test is to do a proper test as I did above. You may find things are just fine.
The procedure is not very smoothy, but it's not because of the battery.
Here is my story, hope can help someone.
After replaced the battery, I still got beeps sound every couple hour.
And the UPS display still showing the battery dead symbol.
I did some research online, and it says you need to do a manual battery test or wait till it does the every 2 weeks scheduled test by itself.
Since the manual test button is also the power button and my UPS couldn't be shut down.
I don't want to take a risk to do the manual test, so I decided to wait until the self-test done.
Fountanatly, after couple days, the self-test has been done.
No more beeps, no more battery dead symbol on the display.
