5.0 out of 5 starsWow, really good

I am a Life Coach so my entire world is basically coaching habits. Instilling new habits and adjusting the old ones. I am constantly looking for anything that could potentially help my clients, and myself. Sometimes its a word, or a phrase, or an idea. In this case its most of the book. Because how the author uses plain talk, real world examples and story telling it really resonated with me. For some experts I suppose there might not be too much new here, but, the author does provide several examples of APPLICATION of the ideas. Its easy to say, "Yeah I know that already" quite another to actually go do what you know. We all know we should eat healthier, work out more, get better sleep, etc. But do we? If we do, do we do it consistently, successfully? This is where there is real horse power in this book. Lots of take aways for me and my clients. Not sure how I have gone this long without knowing about James Clear. Loved this book, super easy read, can't recommend it enough.

2.0 out of 5 starsSolid Skimmer
Reviewed in Canada on August 1, 2020
This is a solid skimmer. Just another supposed groundbreaking self-help book from some guy who has been declared an expert by repeating well known ideas to a corporate audience and can effectively write for the masses at a sixth grade level. This book is a pseudo-intellectual approach to the well known. These are all ideas that I have heard expressed better elsewhere and there isn't a single unique idea in the book. It's a book by a guy with a silver tongue, mediocre research skills, and who found a publisher with a good copy editor. It wouldn't be so cringey to read if he didn't refer to concepts as "Laws" which they are not, and proper noun "Principles" which is also barely true. Talk about self aggrandizing.

There is a lot of repetition here as well. This whole book could have been written in 75 pages.

There's nothing wrong with buying this book if you think it will help but I recommend reading the first couple of chapters and then reading chapter summaries to determine if you already know the content. Then you can dive in on anything that is new to you. I spent about an hour going cover to cover. See if you can get it used or at the Library or something. It's not worth spending more than a few bucks on.

One of the most updated and simplest information available for someone who really wants to make a change in his life.

Please when you read this book, Have a pen and notebook ready to understand the very basic idea behind it. I have seen that we can read more and more and consume as much as we like, But a real impact is felt when we make a plan, how to benefit from the book.

I am not the expert in providing an in-depth review but this book is not a waste of time and a Must read if you have kids or you are a professional who really interested to eliminate habits which are keeping you unproductive.

I preordered this book and was given an audio version and now have received my hardcover.

will provide a more productive review soon.

Thanks

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of the bunch on this topic

I wasn't sure if I'd get into this book as I've read others with the same theme.. such as Compound Effect by Darren Hardy, One Small Step Can Change Your Life: The Kaizen Way.. loved them both. However, here's the difference. I'm actuallly now using the strategies in Atomic Habits! I love the layering approach James uses to build out the blueprint through the book in strategies to create a good habit and how to break a bad habit. This truly brings it all together in something I can actually implement and put to practice. It's important to get the most of out this book, to go beyond just reading it but also gradually implementing the "laws" .. for example, I'm now focused on mastering the "Make it obvious" 4 strategies with great success.. and now integrating in the 2nd law of "Make it attractive", etc. This is exactly what I was after - a simple progressive habit building system. the best book of the bunch out there on this topic.

This book is very well written, simple to follow and practical for developing many different habits. I've been able to follow the suggestions in the book to help me build up several of my own habits for weeks now including going to the gym, reading (which has created a positive feedback loop), flossing and some other habits too. Would highly recommend for anyone trying to get habits to stick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Competent, focused and structured in its communication

The kind of writing that makes it feel like the book he wanted to write couldn't have been written much better, even with a large amount of further effort. Very concise, clear, sequential, useful writing that is easy to understand and apply without being boring or taking too long to read. Feels like a structured essay that was brutally pared down to the most important parts.

Chapters are short explanations/summaries of various concepts and strategies (usually focused on one per chapter along with a story or real life example) that are simplified and then fitted to a lightweight, easy to remember framework, allowing for easy recall and individual contextual extrapolation in your real life. As always, different books are better or worse fits for different people at different points in their lives that have different tastes and usage cases. This book has its own style, and if you think it might be a good fit for what you need, you should consider it. I found it fun to read, interesting and useful.

This book is a very useful book. It will help you. It is not fluff. The writing is average just like most of the authors out there, however, he has put it in simple language as to how to make good habits and avoid bad habits. A book that is worth its monies. Good luck.

5.0 out of 5 stars The absolute best book I've ever purchase

This is probably the best book I've ever read. I'm not really a fan of reading books in general, but this is the only book I've ever read in which every page had something I wanted to write down (and I did!).
I'm a pile of bad habits to be honest. And I bought this book to see if it would help me straighten out some of my bad habits. What I can say so far is that - this actually works. I expected it to be something like "If you really want it, you can do it", but it's definitely not like that. The book actually explains habits with science, breaks it down to how they are created, then the author dissects the whole process and talks about where to start changing them and how to do it. There's no magic in there, no mysterious willpower or any other bullocks involved, just plain explanation from a scientific point of view and tools to make a change.

So far I've been successful in removing a bad snacking habit from my life (which I thought would be a tough one but it wasn't), I've created a good water drinking habit (which I thought would be impossible).

I love how this book never makes me feel bad about having a bad habit. It explains that it's not actually me being unmotivated or lazy, it's the way our brain works and we have to learn how to handle our own brain and that's exactly what this book does.

This is the absolute most useful book I've ever purchased.

3.0 out of 5 stars Changed My Life
Reviewed in Canada on March 5, 2021

I can't say enough good things about this book and how it's helped me get more done, and have a healthier life. The logic of his steps just make sense. Keep at it and the next thing you know, you're finally feeling productive and overall there is improvement on many levels. My only worry, and the reason I gave it 3 stars is because of the beginning of the book where the author goes on and on about his accomplishments. It smacked of incredible insecurity and unwarranted over the top bravado. I wish he'd had the confidence to just introduce his beliefs and system and allow the process to speak for itself, otherwise I think some people will just stop before they even get to what matters in the book. I'd say ignore the first 1/4, and read the really good ideas that, if you stick to them, even haphazardly in the beginning, eventually before you know it, it all falls into place. You'll be glad you read this book and followed what this man passionately believes in. Good luck :-).
