From the number one New York Times best-selling author of the Reckoners series, the Mistborn trilogy, and the Stormlight Archive comes the third book in an epic series about a girl who will travel beyond the stars to save the world she loves from destruction.
Spensa’s life as a Defiant Defense Force pilot has been far from ordinary. She proved herself one of the best starfighters in the human enclave of Detritus, and she saved her people from extermination at the hands of the Krell - the enigmatic alien species that has been holding them captive for decades. What’s more, she traveled light-years from home as an undercover spy to infiltrate the Superiority, where she learned of the galaxy beyond her small, desolate planet home.
Now, the Superiority - the governing galactic alliance bent on dominating all human life - has started a galaxy-wide war. And Spensa’s seen the weapons they plan to use to end it: the Delvers. Ancient, mysterious alien forces that can wipe out entire planetary systems in an instant. Spensa knows that no matter how many pilots the DDF has, there is no defeating this predator.
Except that Spensa is Cytonic. She faced down a Delver and saw something eerily familiar about it. And maybe, if she’s able to figure out what she is, she could be more than just another pilot in this unfolding war. She could save the galaxy.
The only way she can discover what she really is, though, is to leave behind all she knows and enter the Nowhere. A place from which few ever return.
To have courage means facing fear. And this mission is terrifying.

The plots in this series are simpler that the plot lines in the Mistborn or Stormlight books, as expected for a YA book. Primarily in respect to there being only one main character or viewpoint, rather than multiple, interleaving plotlines.
The story was a lot of fun. I liked the environment and imagination, all the different elements that blended together to be wholly unique. There were some stunning reveals and twists near the end that I could never have guessed. The ending isn't quite a cliffhanger, but it does leave the door open for new adventures.
Spensa, for the most part, remained very strong. I'm not sure I liked how she treated M-Bot some of the time, but I still found her to be a strong female lead. M-Bot remains my favorite of course, with his arc being so unique and endearing. He really is one of my favourite AI characters. That said, he was in close place with a new character named Chet, who stole the spotlight the moment he literally rode onto the page.
Sanderson's world building remains fresh and immersive as we explore these new areas of his galaxy. Each story is filled with his signature wit and charm and sense of soaring adventure. I had a blast with this book and can't wait to see where the next one takes us!
I reread Skyward (1st book of the series) several times. I love it tremendously. The second book wasn't as good, but I enjoyed it. But this third one.... yeah.
Sanderson has good ideas, that’s a given. The themes he brushes on are deep and interesting. I enjoyed said ideas and themes... but I still feel a bit betrayed.
Why spend book 1 making me love characters, then have them absent from book 2 and 3? The whole team dynamic, the camaraderie in Skyward Flight, simply not there.
Also, I had trouble recognizing Spensa (main character), because seems so wise and in touch with her emotions in this book. She often sounds like a wise mentor... which is somewhat out of character for her.

Spensa has been given a choice, go home and fight along either her friends and be another pilot (a great pilot), or become something much more.
Spensa will have a chance to face threats all the heroes and heroines in the old stories faced. Heart breaking choices. New enemies, and allies. Most of all new understanding and skills.
I love everything about thus book. The quest the characters, and the leveling up. The combat is intense. The courage displayed bybthe characters is truly heroic. I also like that they expanded on crossovers in the novella book 2.1 and 2.2. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Maybe that's just me, but I almost felt like the storeyline changed to something totally different mid way through this book.
Can't knock the author really though, even if some of his efforts do seem a bit rushed.

Cannot wait for the next in the series.
