To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.

Ordered a new book. This book is definitely not new.

This is a book that I've long wanted to read but never got around to it so I finally bought it. I was impressed at the depth of research and timeline detail of this whole RJR Nabisco saga and the greed involved. Too bad no one learned from it and this abhorrent greed came home to roost once again again in 2008 and will likely happen again.

Boring. Wish it was more of a non-fiction about LBO’s instead of a fiction format with boring characters and (lack of) action...

I really hated this book. Really boring. Read it from reco’s on Tim Ferris podcast. Thought it would be more non-fiction docu style. Turned out to be basically a fiction type format but all the characters are the same and the action in the entire book is old men sitting around conference room tables being pissy with each other about millions of dollars. Really don’t know why this is a recommended book, if anyone enjoyed this I would love to know why?

I still reread this book from time to time. The movie was fantastic, but the book goes into more detail. Anyone who wants to learn about Leveraged Buyouts should read this book.

Fantastic and Still Relevant
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on April 16, 2016Verified Purchase
Who would have thought that, 30 years later, this book would still be relevant? The story inside is still repeated today. The financial services industry is still playing the same game, fees over client interests. The CEO's are still taking ever larger pay checks for little, or no, real return. Shareholders are still as powerless they've always been.
This is a rollicking read, fast paced and absorbing. The characters are intriguing, fascinating and downright ugly. Yet the story, especially for a supposedly dull subject, grips you and pulls you in.
You will entertained, disgusted, angry and ride a rollercoaster of emotions but you will not be bored.

Almost unbelievable

An incredible read that reminds us of the worst excesses of the 1980s. It charts the unimaginable progress of a a food brands company who merge with a bakery and then with a tobacco company who also have a number of food brands. They attempt a management buy out but the Wall St vultures soon start to circle. The excesses are incredible and the voices of the few good men are drowned out. It was the biggest takeover of its day and I'm not sure all of its lessons have been learned. A gripping story, well written - the cast list at the front is essential as so many people were involved in this epic narrative. I think I would have appreciated knowing just what each company was there for - I guess American readers would know which ones were banks, law firms etc but I had to figure it out as I went. An outstanding read for anyone interested in business

Flawless business thriller - exquisitely written and thoroughly researched
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on June 24, 2021Verified Purchase
This is one of my favourite books ever, read four times. The writing is superb and addictive, with fantastic moments of scene-setting and character definition. The underlying story is well researched and compelling. The authors encapsulate people and events in a narrative that in every detail, reveals the extraordinary and the flawed in human nature and therefore appeals to the readership well beyond those with any business or finance-specific interest. Highly recommended for anyone interested in reading a good story

Front-row seats for the feeding frenzy!

This long book had been on my reading list for some time but I finally bit the bullet and bought it. I'm glad I did! The authors' easy style transforms an intricate M&A transaction into something agreeable and accessible: no small feat considering key elements of the story turn on PIK securities ratios, the tax regime applicable to instalment notes and similar capital markets esoterica. This frames the human story of in-fighting among literally scores of dealmakers, bankers and lawyers (and their WAGs), each with their own role and backstory. The resulting mess is prodigious, entertaining and educational.

fantastic story on what happened...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on September 17, 2011Verified Purchase
the leveraged buy out of rjr nabisco was, as far as i am aware, the largest of it's kind in the 1980's. this book details exactly what happened. what makes this book a great read is that it tells the reader exactly what happened. what i really like about this book is that it that it indirectly gives you an indepth study of the ceo of rjr nabisco at that time - ross johnson. if anyone wants career advice then this should be the guy you get advice from - the book explains how he rose to get to the top job in one of the largest brands in america at the time - and how he got the best from people... a good book, but in all fairness, incredibly heavy - could have been a hundred pages shorter...
