Disturbing children’s book written by gender theory activists to “start a conversation” designed to initiate confusion in very young children undermining their core identity of being either a ‘girl’ or a ‘boy’ based on their biological sex. Misguided teacher’s who may consider introducing this book and it’s theory into their classrooms as ‘fact’ can be assured of facing angry parents in the future.

We were so happy with “Our Skin” that we immediately preordered “Being You” - it arrived today and my four year old has already asked to read it twice.

Lovely illustrations, easy to understand and very approachable for little minds. I think a lot of millennial parents may be in the same boat as our family - wanting to raise anti-racist, inclusive children, but often times overthink those discussions as we ourselves did not have the examples as easily instilled in us as children. These books really help me feel like I’m definitely on the right path.

We’ve had the pronoun talk in our household already, and I love how the book integrates questions right in with the storytelling, as my daughter was excited to be able to tell me her pronouns when prompted. I love this series and cannot wait to see what they release next!

The authors of this series are extraordinarily talented at distilling important, nuanced socio-politic concepts into child appropriate language. The structure of the book--interspersing simply articulated content with questions and engaging illustrations-- make these books true to their name: they are conversations to be had over and over again. So many well intentioned grown ups who are trying to be more inclusive than their own parents had been don't have good (or any!) models of what these conversations can sound like. This book is a wonderful scaffold for these caregivers. I can't wait for their next book in the series!

Similar to their first book “Our Skin” about race and racism, “Being You” is also excellent in using kid friendly explanations to teach kids about gender. Instead of ignoring tough topics, this gives us as parents tools to address them and answer questions while building empathy and teaching inclusion. Which will sadly scare some parents (as reflected in some of the negative reviews for “Our Skin” and will no doubt get some for this book as well) but we can choose to parent differently to counteract hate and not fear differences. And of course teach any child the invaluable lesson to just be you.

I'm very selective about books for my kiddo. I was able to preview some of these pages online while I was looking for books to start the gender conversation with my little one (born a girl but has been calling themselves a boy since they could speak, also on the Autism spectrum, so big concepts like gender are a little tougher) so that we could be sure that our kiddo could have the tools and language to talk about their gender when they are ready. We read this together and both of us loved it. It's a regular in our rotation now and it helped give my kiddo the language they needed to be able to communicate with us better about who they are. I'm really glad that I found this book!

I’m really impressed with this book. A lot of kids books about complex, progressive topics like gender, feminism, anti racism, etc., are overly complicated/not understandable for a child, or silly, superficial and uninformed. This book is accurate, well thought out, and fun to read. A huge win! It’s a bit advanced for my 18 month old but he still enjoys reading it and it will open up great conversations for years to come.
