I hate to be a spoil sport here, because I love the Berenstain Bears, but these stories could be so much better. What I mean is this- I think that there are a lot of Christians who are buying this book to read to their kids, but ultimately, the stories lack depth and are severely lacking in the Biblical truths which undergird the morality that they are trying to teach. It makes blanket statements on faith, forgiveness, prayer, God's love- but there is so much more to it than what the book says, and honestly it wouldn't take that much to tell the readers that the reason that God forgives us (and by us, I mean followers of Jesus who have trusted in his substitutionary death on the cross) isn't that God is a jolly old man in the sky who just loves everyone, but rather that He punished His own son instead. And as people who have been redeemed and forgiven, Jesus calls us to forgive others. Does this take nuance to explain in a clear way to young readers? Yes. Is it possible? Absolutely. This book, and frankly all the Berenstain Bears "religiously oriented books" really give a fuzzy picture of what the most important message of Christ really is- which is to say that Christ died for our sins and that by trusting in him, sinners like us can be reconciled to God. Anything outside of that? Just morality and "spirituality" which while important, is empty without the gospel tying thing together.
It is a little sad to me, personally to see how far Zondervan Books has sunk that they put out such "light" books that don't tell the full picture, biblically.
