About the Author
Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bear books in 1962. Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too. The Berenstain Bears celebrated their 50th Anniversary in 2012.
Stan and Jan Berenstain were already successful cartoonists for magazines and adult humor books when they began writing children's books. The first story starring the bear family, The Big Honey Hunt, appeared in 1962. Since then, more than 370 Berenstain Bears books have been published, and more than 300 million copies have been sold. What began as an idea sparked by their young sons' love of reading has become over the years arguably the best-selling children's book series ever.
Since their inception, the Berenstain Bears stories have expanded to include picture books, beginning readers, and chapter books--even a hit TV show on PBS. Writing and illustrating the books has become a Berenstain family affair. Mike joined with his parents as a creative team in the late 1980s. The Bear family has expanded over the years as well. Sister Bear arrived in 1974, and baby Honey joined the family in 2000.
Though Stan died in 2005 and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Berenstain Bear adventures from his studio in Pennsylvania.

That being said, I have read many, many more Berenstain Bear books as my son has grown. I prefer the older Stan and Jan books overall over Mike's own books. The stories are better, although Papa Bear does seem to yell a lot. The newer (Mike only) books seem to cover the same ideas in multiple books. They also seem to really focus on how great mom is, but nothing that I've seen so far celebrating Papa Bear. What gives?
My son doesn't seem to have the same problem I do, but he does prefer the older ones too. This may just be due to the fact there are more older than newer stories. I think he will like the Joy of Giving more now than last year, as he is now three and more aware of Christmas/presents/celebrations and more into the Berenstain Bears.

Some people have complained about the religious message of the book, so if you're looking for something that is more generic, try reading the Berenstain Bears Think of Those in Need. It doesn't have the Christmas theme, but it does talk about the Bears giving to others, especially with all of their excess stuff.
Those who are looking for a Christian themed giving book, this one is perfect. It also includes thoughtful questions in the end to discuss with your children. Both of my sons enjoyed it and our older one is really starting to understand the concept of giving to others. I especially loved the part when they begin singing Silent Night. I was so overcome by the emotion of it all and even started to cry.
All in all it's a great book and I too was surprised by the Christian themes, but I was pleasantly surprised. There are other alternatives for those looking for something else.

Sadly, the original authors, Stan and Jan, no longer write these books and are no longer with us. Bless them for creating the Berenstain Bears. Their son, Mike, has taken up the mantle of continuing the Berenstain Bears legacy; big shoes to fill.
Unfortunately, the apple has fallen far from the tree. While the illustrations are still great and there is a story and lesson, the original books never threw religion in your face. It wasn't critical to the story. Here, its intertwined and you can't have one without the other.
This feels like a missionary trip disguised as a book.
Please bring back the original Berenstain Bears. I hope they re-discover their roots and return to their charming Bear selves.
+1 star for Amazon, +1 for the illustrations.
