The angst and longing promise because the heroine was pining after her boyfriend’s dad does not land well. This book is a conventional romance with a a lead couple with a large age difference. In that light it does well enough but it isn’t why I picked up the book.
The heroine, Jordan, was a good character. She is young so her pride (read stubbornness) and her constant doubting of her self worth were realistic. A bit much if you’re older but nothing unreal. She read a little older than her age but I guess that was the point - she was a old soul in a young body. It made the romance between her and the hero, Pike, all the more believable.
The boyfriend on the other hand was real non-entity. He is objectively a jerk but he hardly appears in the story and gets no POV. This hurt the story as I really didn’t care that Jordan was thinking of his dad or that she was afraid of cheating. Pike’s angst about lusting after his son’s girlfriend was a little more believable, but again, without knowing the son it didn’t really matter to the emotional core of the story. I just wanted the leads to get together.
The story is definitely more of a slow-burn romance which takes it time. For being this sexy book, there is actually no sex in the first half. Once the couple gets together they go at it but the relationship part of the book is actually pretty short. They spend more time mooning after each other which can get a bit dull to read. It would have been nice to see more steam - or perhaps shorten the book by 10% or so.
I do give the book credit for making Jordan more aggressive than typical heroines - she knew what she wanted. Good for her.
In the end, I am giving this an average rating of 2 as it was ok. It wasn’t what I was promised. I will say that if expectations are adjusted this will likely be enjoyable for people. The writing is nice enough and parts of the book are pretty cute and sexy
I wanted something quick and dirty (more erotica-esque but still has substance) and this was nothing of the sort. It was painfully slow. Like, I'm all for slow burn romances but we really don't light a match until the 50% mark. It didn't read like a forbidden romance or have that delicious tension. It just made the whole book drag; the exposition is far too long.
Jordan was a little all over the place; during the sexy times she would become this whole other person that just seemed so out of character. Easy could have cut out 100 pages and still got the same story across.
I picked up this book because of a random recommendation post. Read it in one sitting. Forgot to sleep. Cried so much that I got a headache next day. My heart is still reeling.
I'm not a fan of MC Romance (which this is not) and taboo romance, which Ms Douglas writes. But I thank god she decided to write this. Thank heavens I gave it a chance as she is a new to me author. I may be forever her fan now because of this book, even if I decide to read all her other books or not. (Of course I will now.)
I will forever remember Birthday Girl, the hurt, the transcendent love, the beauty and ugly. Read it. Read it now.
One of the things I liked best about this story is that it is a true romance at its core. It's not a kinky, lust-filled story of a couple who gets it on whenever they can so long as no one knows, type of thing. Rather, the theme of the story is meeting that person who you feel that you are truly meant to be with in less-than-ideal circumstances.
What I loved about the story: the slow-burning build between Jordan and Pike. I loved their first meeting and the connection they first had. I loved seeing that connection morph into something different when she realized who he was. It then developed into something deeper when Jordan moved in with Pike. Another great thing about the story was that it was exceptionally well-written, in dual POVs.
And now here are the things I'm not too fond of: when Jordan and Pike finally came clean with their feelings, I felt like there was too much lust instead of romance, which their feelings were based on. I would have liked to see more tender moments than sexy ones. Also - Jordan's situation seemed very unrealistic which made it hard for me to connect. She has no family she can properly rely on, and she works 12 hour days at a bar while struggling for every penny. I recognize that I may be more privileged than most, but I think many authors overlook that "normal" characters, with parents who are available and loving, are also worth reading about.
Overall, I really did enjoy this story.

- The author has a beautiful writing style.
- There is no cheating between the two main characters.
- The sex scenes are steamy.
- This story is sooo unrealistic - or worrisome. A 38-year old guy finds his one true love in a 19-year old girl over the course of a few weeks. Are you joking? No 19-year old girl is THAT mature. So, then I'm left to infer that the 38-year old guy is an emotionally stunted jerk... how can I see him as the sexy older guy he's supposed to be? Ugh. I probably would have swooned over this fairytale as a teenager but I've not been a teenager for quite some time.
Jordan is a strong beautiful young woman who meets a man at the cinema and gets talking to him. He's older than her considerably but she gets on with him really well and lets face it the man is hot stuff, built, with tattoos and a pretty face she feels an attraction to him. Still at the end of the film they say their goodbyes and they each go their own way, she's never going to bump into him again - right ? WRONG . When her and her boyfriend Cole loose their apartment he says they can move in with his Dad until they save enough money to get another place, but when she see's who his Dad is she get's the shock of her life - yep enter Pike, Cole's father, the man from the picture house. Awkward or what !!
So this is where it starts to get all angsty and frustrating as we get the smoldering build up of a relationship development between Cole's father and his girlfriend. The characters are just wonderfully written and are so easy to like and get to know. I totally loved Pike and Jordan too although she could be a little childish at times which I guess is normal for a nineteen year old. The times I wanted to throw my kindle at the wall in frustration was many I can tell you, but then we hit 68% and this book soared and I mean soared right up to that scorching sun in the sky. I had a smile on my face that was so wide it actually hurt but it was so good and hot and sexy and delicious - DON'T MISS READING THIS BOOK !!!!
So in my opinion Penelope Douglas has outdone herself with this one, I have loved her other books but this for me was just perfection. A tease of a book, full of love, feelings, smoldering lust, decisions of what's right and wrong, heart's being denied and learning lessons - just magnificent, don't miss the chance to experience this book and how it will make you feel !!!
Jordan is a nineteen year old that doesn’t actually know her own strength, she is independent and is used to relying only on herself and her older sister Cam to get through, she’s Living in a small town studying landscape design and making ends meet with her boyfriend Cole who is choosing to be just as unreliable as everyone else in her life and due to circumstances beyond her control they end up living with Cole’s estranged father Pike. They are meant to be staying there until they can save enough money to get back on their feet.
Pike and his son haven’t been getting along for years due to his mother’s manipulation and all he wants to do is be there for him and help him out anyway that he can. He is shocked to the core that the girl he met at the cinema was his sons girlfriend, trying to deny the instant chemistry that sparks between them from the start and now she’s living with him.
I honestly don’t want to say too much about this story other than it will have you desperate to find out the ending and the tension between the characters as they all try to deny their true feelings will have you on the edge of your seat, and at times have tears in your eyes with a pain in your heart. This book is definitely one of my top reads so far of 2018, I enjoyed every moment of this angst ridden, slightly taboo slow burn of a romance and it’s a MUST READ as far as I am concerned.
Jordan is a really likeable heroine. Yes, she is 19 and at times there are reminders that she is young but she is an old soul and really mature with her outlook on life. She had to grow up fast and it made her resilient and resourceful. She's a sweet girl and my heart ached for her sometimes with how alone she was in life. Her relationship with Cole started out as friends and they got together romantically after their closest friend died. It felt like a relationship that they drifted into.
Pike is such a gorgeous Hero. OMG, he stole my heart. He and Jordan are so similar in many ways. He tries everything to quash his attraction to her, but it honestly felt as though these two were soulmates and they were absolutely destined to be together. The path they walk is a rocky one at times. The story shredded my heart in places but I was completely invested in them as a couple and wanted them with each other.
I would really urge you to read this love story. It's addictive , sweet, sexy (OMG - Pike is HOT), heartbreaking and memorable. I lost sleep over this book because I could not put it down. This quote perfectly sums it up....
"For however long it lasts, I’m a little braver, and he’s my new hero"
Ahhh...you and me both Jordan.
HEA? Yes - gorgeous
Cheating? No. (Not between Jordan and Pike. They don't do anything physical until after Jordan and Cole have split. Emotionally they are very drawn to each other from the start).
Forbidden Romance - ✔
Age gap - ✔
Steam - ✔ (like off the scale 🌶)
It's safe to say I fell hook, line and sinker for this book. This had been on my wishlist since this time last year and holy mother of spice I wish I'd just bought it a year ago
The slow burn of this had me literally gripping my kindle for dear life, grinding my teeth and perched on the on the edge of the sofa. The frustration of the slow build up was well worth the 3 day jaw ache it gave me because when I hit around the 60% mark we had lift off and it was worth every damn second, my heart soared and I had the stupidest of grins on my face and still do now 2 days later (queue more jaw ache)
Im very open minded with this genre and love a taboo subject, but the relationship between Pike and Jordan didn't feel taboo at all, it felt very real and very raw. Their connection had me rooting for them right from the start. These two souls were meant for each other despite their age difference. The backstories give you hope and their journey to getting together has the potential to shut down a lot of stereotypical/societal views perfectly. I know a lot of people really won't feel comfortable reading this one and that's fine but it really cemented for me, why I love everything about this genre and that I will always need to read more and need to stop worrying about what people think and get them on my shelves/kindle #youdoyou
