Kota, a sorceress who works as a detective with the Grimmani Detective Agency, is on her way to a new posting on the world of Proximus. She’s been charged with transporting a mystical artifact called a Keystone that will allow Proximus to build a magical gateway back to Kota’s homeworld of Emake Maa. When the Aethership transporting Kota is attacked by pirates, Kota helps fight them off, and finds herself taking care of a half demon woman, Nadani who was being held as a slave on the pirate ship.
When Kota and Nadani arrive on Proximus, Kota is injured in an attempted assassination, and finds herself embroiled in a plot involving cultists who want her dead for some reason. Kota begins to dig into the motives of the assassin while trying to navigate her growing feelings for Nadani. Something made all the harder by more attempts on her life and the emotional minefield that Nadani’s past as a slave left behind.
When Kota learns that the assassins may be after Nadani as well, she becomes desperate to learn what they want. Something that puts her on a collision course with a cult that wants to use Nadani and the Keystone to open a permanent gateway to hell itself.

A great book with a great cast of characters.

First of all, I was a beta reader for this novel. I bought my own copy, however. I love the characters, with my favourite one being Petyr. He makes the book for me. It's well-plotted, and Kota is a competent protagonist who turns into a puddle of uselessness when faced with a pretty girl. I very much recommend this, along with Molly's other books. If you like science fiction/fantasy and lesbian fiction, this book is for you.

Loved it

As always, a great read, I couldn't put it down. Nice balance of action and romance. Personally, I like that it doesn't add unforeshadowed surprise twists just to wring out additional drama; instead, you can pretty much come to the right conclusions on where the story will lead from the same clues the characters get.

engrossing and wonderful fantasy romance

There is some special with the way that Molly weaves her stories, and this one is no exception. Deep, rich and engrossing, I ended up reading through it in a day, unable to put it down and wanting to see what happened next, and how the relationship would develop between the main characters. And that is certainly saying something.
There is a lot going on, after all. The change in worlds for Kota's job is just scratching the surface, an attack by pirates en route to the new planet the catalyst for everything that follows. Nadina coming into her life brings along a lot of complications, and getting badly injured in an assassins attack can certainly leave one vulnerable.
There is a complexity and depth to their relationship. Especially with what they both have been through, their backgrounds having a strong influence on them, as it should. But seeing it grow, as they learn more about each other, and as the world throws itself at them, is absolutely wonderful. And Pyter's interactions with Kota, and then Nadine as well as the story progresses - so cute and adorable, the dragon really stealing the spotlight at times. This is not a tale where they meet and fall into bed, but rather one where there relationship is explored and perhaps more comes out of it than initially thought. And the respect that Kota has is just awesome.
This really is a wonderful story. A real depth to the world building, wonderfully penned, a tale of both romance and action, their lives not a quiet one. Highly recommended!

A fun bit of fantasy, mystery and very mild romance

I really enjoyed the world / universe building in this book - a space traveling sci-fi mystery with magic instead of science.
The characters were delightful and the romance PG at worse - nothing more than kissing and cuddling. This story is mainly a fantasy with a bit of mystery that just happens to revolve around two lovely lady MCs (and a precocious tiny dragon sidekick).
I’ve enjoyed everything this author has penned to date and look forward to what comes next.
