My mom grew up in Davison, MI in the 40's and 50's. My Dad was also from (Royal Oak) Michigan, and they carried over much of the same family traditions and lifestyle - even while raising a family in Virginia in the 70's. The book has been passed from me to my mom, then dad. And once my sister's seen it, I want it back to try some of the recipes. They sound like good simple comfort food.

This is a charming family novel that was a breath of fresh air with the real world is in such turmoil. I was intrigued by the title and just had to see what it meant. I was not disappointed.

Even if you're not interested in the recipes -- although I must confess I bookmarked a few -- this story of a family making its way around the United States, little kids in tow, is a delight.

Truly an enjoyable book! Coincidentally, I also grew up in Michigan so I recognized a lot of the Michigan references (three day funerals, et al). The book is light-hearted, amusing and poignant. The chapter regarding the father's illness made me reflect on the loss of my dad and I had to put the book down and dry my eyes before I could continue! This book is a hidden gem!

How lucky the author was to have been raised with so much love and sense of adventure. As a product of a dysfunctional family, I was green with envy reading this book. But I loved it. The writing is excellent, by the way.
