About the Author

After a decade as a bookseller, Kyle now works as a school librarian and writer in New York City. He firt came out as trans in 2004, and has over fifeen years of experience in discussing trans identities and issues with adults and children from many different communities.

Luciano Lozano completed a postgraduate degree in Creative Illustration at Eina School in Barcelona in 2007. In 2012, he won the Junceda Prize for the best book published abroad. In 2015, he won the El Dragn Lector Award for best illustrated children's book. He currently lives in Barcelona, Spain.

Kyle Lukoff is the author of the Stonewall-award winning picture book "When Aidan Became A Brother," by Kaylani Juanita. His debut was "A Storytelling of Ravens," illustrated by Natalie Nelson, which came out in 2018.

Kyle was born outside of Chicago, Illinois in 1984, and moved to Lynnwood, Washington in 1989. He moved to New York City in 2002 to attend Barnard College, and became the librarian at the Corlears School in 2012. After eight years of school librarianship he transitioned to writing full-time.

Kyle served two terms on the Stonewall Book Awards committee, and was a 2020 Kirkus Prize judge. He transitioned in 2007, and much of his professional work revolves around transgender representation in books for youth.

I bought this book because it has recently been banned in FL, so I wanted to show my support to the author. “Call Me Max” is age appropriate and does an excellent job explaining to a younger audience what it means to be trans. The illustrations are colorful, whimsical and drawn in a way that children will love following along with Max’s journey. In 2023 children need more books like this to know that it’s ok to be exactly who you are.

I highly recommend this book for all kids regardless of gender identification. It’s a great explanation of what it means to be trans and really helps to get those conversations going with young readers. I especially appreciate how the book explains what it means to be trans without relying on stereotypes that perpetuate gender binaries (e.g. Max realized that not wanting to wear dresses isn’t what makes him a boy because his friend is a boy who likes to wear dresses). I also love that this book takes on some of the challenges young trans kids may face at school without making them seem too scary. I have a five-year-old trans son who loves this book. It helped us to talk about some things that are hard to address while also letting him feel seen and heard. I love that this book is written by a trans author who shares more of his experiences at the end.

I do hope to see more picture books that feature trans, non-binary, or gender nonconforming kiddos as regular kids doing regular kid things (in other words, not every picture book with trans kids has to make their “transness” the plot), but I still wish every kid would have a grownup to read this book with them.

When Aiden Became a Brother is another great choice, and is perhaps even better because it focuses on a trans kid of color. These books give hope for a brighter future!

I read this book to my first grade class and have received praise from the parents for reading it. My class was lucky enough to have Kyle visit and share another of his books. Call Me Max is a beautifully written book that allows for kids to understand feelings and thoughts that could be running through their own brains, as well as an extremely important lesson, ACCEPTANCE.
