4.0 out of 5 starsWell researched historical fiction
Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on January 4, 2021
Although the character is purely fictional, the author's mastery of the period lends credence to something that one would hope would happen in real life at the time.

What a disappointment. Was absolutely thrilled with the Large Type. Wonderful for these old eyes. Sadly the book reads like a trumped up Harlequin romance. A silly waste of time & money.

3.0 out of 5 stars ending was too awkward

While I liked most of the story…the fact that she left and didn’t have the integrity to tell the truth after she was all over him about honesty and truth made the story lacking.

3.0 out of 5 stars A very slow read for me

I had high hopes for this novel but I found the short chapters that often advanced ahead in time by a week or a month rather unfulfilling. I would have questions about how something would get resolved and then it wouldn't. One example is Clara wondering on the train where she would sleep (as did I), and then nothing was ever mentioned. It was a slow read for me as the chapters didn't transition well so I kept putting the book down. I also had a problem with the ending. Spoiler alert... She decided that she couldn't tell Andrew the truth about her other Clara Kelley identity and decided to flee. Would Andrew have really cared which Irish immigrant Clara Kelley she was? I don't think it would have made a difference to him. Also, she decided to flee and not tell him in the off chance he cancelled her stock certificates and she needed that money to bring her family over. Well, she could have cashed the certificates, brought her family over and then found him and told him the truth, especially since she overheard how much he cared for her (and also had a letter from Mr Ford that reiterated that). I found that a pretty big flaw. And the richest man in the world, wasn't successful in hiring private investigators to find her? There's also no context for Clara never marrying in the end, which was rather abrupt and unfulfilling.

The story went on and on. Then it ended. The author wraps the story up in a short epilogue. I was disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Prefer real life characters

Book Club was disappointed she didn’t tell the story through Mrs. Carnegie, a real life character who was amazing in her own right. The Carnegie story is nothing short of incredible. Why dilute it with fictional Clara Kelley? We all loved Personal Librarian (Belle was REAL) and we eagerly awaited this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars A different book that should possibly be read by everyone.

This book was not hard to read except it really wasn’t a novel or a biography or historical. It was a novel because it was story about an Irish immigrant girl that became another Clara Kelly who died on their transatlantic crossing that took place at about the time of the Irish Potato Famine just as the Civil War was happening.
This book wasn’t really hard to read except for the subject matter. I had to take several breaks because although 80% of the book was either Clara’s thoughts or conversations, the other 20% was either peripheral people or Andrew Carnegie or his mother. And all of it together was a great book but a story that didn’t just happen but had to evolve.
And Marie Benedict did a great job as the author.
I’m glad I got it and especially happy that I read the book.
Just realize that it is a different story but worth reading.

I have enjoyed all of Marie Benedict's stories. This one is my least favorite as the ending is so abrupt. It is still a good read though.

3.0 out of 5 stars I have always had an interest in Andrew Carnegie

I have always had an interest in Andrew Carnegie so I decided to read this book even though it is fiction. I struggled through the first third of the book as I prefer actual history but I persisted since I don't like leaving things undone. I finally got interested about half way through. For a fictional novel it was fine but not great. I did find a couple instances where the writing seemed sloppy and I felt should have been caught by the proofreader.

My book Club read. Kind of a slow-paced storyline. Reminded me of a selection on a Jr High Summer reading list. A sweet, but uncompelling read.

1.0 out of 5 stars False, made up story attaching itself to a very famous man's name

I read this because I belong to a book club. Then I tried to find who this maid was and she does NOT exist.
Absolutely no trace to her!!!
This book is a complete work of fiction, coming from the mind of the author and it is not right to attach it to Andrew Carnegie and make it sound like it was real. It's stuns me why anyone would do this??
If you want to read light fiction this is for you. If you want to learn about the great Andrew Carnegie
read his biography.
