The book goes back and forth between the present and the past in Caleb's story. You're introduced to him as a child so you get to see the beginning of his story and you also follow him as a young man. The dinosaurs are a mainstay throughout the story but they aren't The Story. The story is about Caleb, his interactions with those around him, and his understanding that you can't survive alone. I must say though, Chuck is my most favorite character - lovable and lethal - I really want a Chuck!
There are a couple of things that made me waiver between four and five stars - and I changed back and forth several times undecided. First, I remain unsure exactly where the dinosaurs came from or how they got here. I admit that this may be a failing on my part and I may just need it spelled out more clearly for me. Second, I was never quite sure why dinosaurs were part of the Reaver's (the bad guy's) motivation. The story would have been more complete for me if more time had been spent on developing the background on that aspect of things. It really left me wondering but in the end it wasn't enough to take away a whole star - maybe a half of one. The whole story wraps up nicely in the end.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes dinosaurs, likes a good clean story - good for any age really - is sick and tired of reading poorly edited "first" novels for Kindle, and wants to read a different take on a well used (and loved) theme. Overall it's a good, entertaining story and I enjoyed it a lot.

This is a fantastic book for anyone who loves dinosaurs, but they aren't the be-all end-all of the book either, and those like myself who aren't that big into dinosaurs will still find a lot of wonder and enjoyment in this novel. I can't speak to the accuracy of the science behind the dinosaurs--not knowing much on the topic myself--but I didn't find anything too far fetched as to make the story unbelievable. Or perhaps I was just too wrapped up in the story to nitpick (not that I'm a nitpicker anyway!)
While it isn't the best novel I've ever read, author Alan MacRaffen shows a great skill in character building and setting, and I eagerly look forward to future projects because I know each new book will be better than the last, and he's off to an amazing start with this adventure!

There were a couple of places where it started to drift, but the author quickly brought it back in line as he steered it to a final confrontation with an ancient evil. Well worth skipping a fancy cup of coffee to buy.
