Clare’s “City of Lost Souls” is book five in Cassandra Clare’s “The Mortal Instruments” series.
This novel picks up right where the last one left off- Clary embarks on a mission to find Jace and break him from the spell put on him by her evil-doing brother Sebastian. Isabelle, Simon, Magnus, Alec, Maia and Justin all play important roles in this quest too, while simultaneously dealing with their tumultuous teenaged relationships.
Werewolves, Shadowhunters, Vampires, warlocks, faeries and other characters of folklore are prominent in all of Clare’s “Instruments” series, and this novel is no different. Although the first novel was primarily the “Clary and Jace” show, her proceeding novels have allowed the reader to develop relationships with the other characters, particularly Simon, which I find has endeared me to her novels even more. Telling the story from several viewpoints gives a reader more than one character to root for (which is good in the Shadowhunter stories- since folks are always dying!).
One final book remains in this series, and then Clare embarks on the risky journey of a “prequel series” (The Infernal Devices). I look forward to seeing how this journey ends and discovering the new series. Popular, widespread YA novels like these tend to get old and sour fast, with repetitive storylines and plots that start out addictive and end with disappointment. I have hope that Clare’s “Instruments” will provide me with a satisfactory ending. After all, I initially disregarded her novels as yet another mainstream fad, and was quickly wrapped up by them, so surprises are always possible.

The series was phenomenal up to now. This book was a little too stretched out for my liking compared to the previous books in the series. Events that had minimal impact on the storyline were over detailed and down right dull. I found myself having to skip through pages just to get to an upbeat scene. Reading this book felt like a chore more than fun reading. I really hope the last novel compares more to the style of the previous books in this series than this one.

A lot of series by the time they get to the 4 or 5th book get boring and dragged out leaving the reader to silently think "hurry up and end it". I am happy to say that Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series is not one of these.
Without giving anything away to those who haven't read it yet, I have to say, it kept me consumed, reading late into the night.
Highly recommendable to anyone who wants to be immersed in great series with clear defined characters, plots, twists. This author is one of the best of the young adult writers.

I never truly get tired of reading (and re-reading) The Mortal Instruments series. The characters, the plot, action and adventure are so amazing to read as they begin to unravel and face difficulties that ultimately shaped who they were and the outcome in the end.
If you haven't read The Mortal Instruments series, do so today. You won't regret it.

I have read and re-read these books. Every time a new book comes out I re-read the series so I can refresh my mind. Out of all the Mortal Instruments this is my absolute favourite.
The way these books are written is amazing. It's written in the 3rd person but you see things from different characters POV. While following a set of characters on their adventure, finding out about them, and then you see some action. You follow another set of characters on their adventure and you see some action and so on, but then they all meet up at the same time. When everybody is their, still written in the 3rd person but manly through Clary POV.
Clary's, Jace and Johnathan's adventure is out of this world. Just their adventure could have been a book on it's own, it's that good. The whole book getting ready for the climax.
This book is 6 weeks after City of Fallen Angels and Jace is still missing. You will learn in this book why that is.
I could not put this book down it is amazing, you are introduced to a few more characters, The relationships between each character deepens and a breakup that is really sad. Not only will you NOT be disappointed in this book you will want to re-read them over and over again. This is a fantastic series and this book is the best.

There's something about not finishing a book that I can't handle the taste of. Unfortunately for me, after The City of Bones, that bad taste felt like it was guaranteed. Cassandra Clare managed to keep me interested enough with the relationship twists and turns and the destruction of all things evil (cheesy much?) but only barely.
I feel so guilty that I didn't enjoy this book because I really hoped after finishing book three thinking it was all over that Clare must have come up with something awesome enough to make her think to write three more. Now, I hate to sound cynical but I really hope it wasn't just a money making ploy because a lot of her other books I've actually enjoyed, but this series for me just hasn't floated my boat.
This book though, set apart from the others as is only fair, does have some really enjoyable elements and I couldn't wait to sink my teeth into them. I love how we get to see so much more of the Shadowhunter world from a more traditional angle; it was great to see the life Clary's parents must have lived and to learn more about how Clary's mother and Luke had developed from their more traditional lives before everything happened with Valentine.
I also really loved to see some of the other characters develop. Isabelle and Alec more specifically; Alec and Magnus kept me hooked and Isabelle is just hilarious. However, this brings me to my first negative. Jace as a character has the worst kind of attitude of any main character I think I've ever come across. I can totally see how Clare imagined he would come across - cocky but attractive nevertheless. But he is written in a way that his arrogance couldn't appear attractive at all; he is so obsessed with looks that I couldn't see the funny side of it any longer.
Clare has written very well in my opinion in some of her books. The series running along side this (The Mortal Devices) is absolutely phenomenal right to the very end of it, I loved every second of reading it. But, TMI just couldn't match it. Her writing style seems so different in comparison - slow, dull and SO MUCH waffling.
I have high hopes for future work of Clare's, really I do. I feel terrible that I didn't enjoy this book because I felt it had so much promise and some aspects of it were great, it's just a shame about the portrayal of Jace this time. I have faith it will improve ready for the next one though.

Book 5 Mortal Instruments
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on March 10, 2013Verified Purchase
This is the fifth book of the Mortal Instruments series. The story picks up right after the events in the previous book. Jace has gone missing with Sebastian who has come back to life. Clary and the gang decide to their own search after the Clave decide to give up the search after 2 weeks. They realize that the ritual that brought Sebastian back to life has linked both Jace and Sebastian together in body and soul. To save Jace and find out what Sebastian's plan is, Clary decides to infiltrate the pair. On the other hand, Simon and the gang with the help of Magnus has been searching for ways to separate Jace and Sebastian, and a way to kill Sebastian without killing Jace.
It is a very good read and kept me entertained throughout. I like the idea of the rings for Simon and Clary to communicate and also the "house" which can travel through different dimensions as a hideout. And we also get to know about the Iron Sisters-the weapon makers for the shadowhunters.
Apart from an exciting storyline, the author also explores more on the relationships between some of the major characters. We can see further development between Simon and Isabelle, Magnus and Alec and even for Clary and Jace.
Isabelle has always been the girl who refuses to give or love but you get to see she is slowly warmed to Simon and they finally become close.
I also quite enjoy reading the relationship between Alec and Magnus and the conflict Alec faces when thinking about the future of their relationship. Magnus is an interesting and mysterious character that we also love to find out more about. I do feel sorry about how it went in the end.
As for Clary and Jace, they have certainly become closer and in a way, through Jace, Clary gets a better understand of Sebastian, and also her father Valentine.
There is a big cliffhanger at the end of the book. Sebastian will come back and there will be a change in the power struggle in the vampire community. I can't wait for the next and final book to come out!

City of Lost Souls (Mortal Instruments 5) - Cassandra Clare

Review: At this stage I have something of a love/hate relationship with these books. On the one hand I like the story and the fantasy elements but on the other hand the characters drive me absolutely insane in a way that I really haven't experienced before.
I liked the storyline in this book. I think that there was a sense of urgency and of outside forces being at play that I thought was missing in some of the previous books. It also did a good job of resolving the story whilst also keeping some strands open for subsequent books.
I actually found the main relationships in this book less irritating than in previous books, possibly because there were some actual problems creating issues rather than simply teenage drama.
**SPOILERS**
I absolutely could not stand, to the extent that it made me really made, the relationship between Maia and Kyle though. It had previously irritated me because I thought that it was sending a bad message about domestic violence but when he then moved on from deciding to give her time to forget that he brutally attacked her to refusing to me her friend and pressuring her to make a decision about their relationship before she was ready I completely wrote the relationship off and it went a long way towards spoiling the books for me. I didn't like the incest storyline but in some ways this was work.
And speaking of incest, was the one incest storyline not enough? We had the Clary/Jace are they/aren't they storyline and I was really pleased that they weren't. Do we really now need Sebastian/Jonathan threatening Clary in a sexual manner? Are there not other ways in which he could threaten and manipulate her?
I'm also very unhappy about the splitting up of Magnus and Jace. They are my favourite couple in the series, more so than Clary and Jace, and I'm hoping that the fact that they've broken up now will lead to more insight into their respective characters in later books.
**SPOILERS**
As strange as it may seem I do quite enjoy these books and I'm even considering reading the Clockwork series, there are just also lots of things about the books that make me really really mad.
Favourite character: Magnus
Favourite quote: "I hope you told him you were bitten by a gay spider."

not sure what it was that hooked me to this series but as soon as I finished each one I couldn't resist buying the next one. I think it's partly that you don't know what is going to happen next and there is always something expected and all sorts of interesting things happen. I tend to read just before bed, to take my mind off other stuff by going into a bit of a fantasy world, but I keep ending up bleary eyed in the morning because I couldn't put the book down. I also like the fact that you follow the main characters all the way through the series and different things happen to them each time, but you still recognise them even after all they go through. I love this series but this book was my least favourite - probably because I disliked Sebastien and I was less fond of Jace in this book
