About the Author

Christopher Penczak (New Hampshire) is an award-winning author, teacher, healing practitioner, and eclectic Witch. His practice draws upon the foundation of modern Witchcraft blended with the wisdom of mystical traditions from across the globe. He has studied extensively with renowned Witch Laurie Cabot and other Witches, shamans, yogis, and healers in the New England area which have influenced his eclectic path of personal Witchcraft. Penczak is an ordained minister of the Universal Brotherhood Movement, is a certified flower essence consultant, and is a certified Reiki Master (Teacher) in the UsuiTibetan and Shamballa traditions. A popular public speaker, he tours extensively throughout the year at bookstores and major gatherings. Penczak is the author of City Magick (Red Wheel;Weiser), Spirit Allies (Red Wheel;Weiser), and Gay Witchcraft (Red Wheel;Weiser'nominated for a Lambda Award). A columnist for newWitch magazine, his work has also been featured in publications such as Genre, InnerSelf Magazine and Kaleidoscope, and his writing appears in the recent book I Do, I Don't: Queers on Marriage. A very basic book .

Contrary to its title there is little practical information in it behind the very beginning level.

There is no real and pratical information on the impact of city life on magic, nothing on the means of detecting other urban magician work.

This book is mainly about the justification of making magic practices in urban context despite the agrarian and rural tradition of wiccan magic.
It's unfortunate that there is no discussion of politic, economic or social urban subjects in the contexte of praticing magic.

So a good book for entry level .

I simply loved this book. It is great to read something that is outside the box. To many times, witchcraft books say the same things and can be often boring. This book is fresh and very exciting for city dwellers. I have lived in an urban setting all my life. I often wondered why modern witchcraft books never spoke much about urban magick. Most people living in a city have no time to travel hours to a secluded spot to perform magick under the moon light by a stream. Magick is everywhere; your apartment, your office, the hustle and bustle of the city. This book may not cover everything having to do with every aspect of urban magick, but it is a start and a book for the beginner/intermediate practitioner. A wealth of information. Great book!

I really enjoyed reading about ways to interact with and explore your city. The parts about finding totems and symbols in our urban environments really resonated with me. The only reason it is not a 5 star is just because a lot of the terminology and info relating to computers and such is very dated.

Penczak is clearly an expert in his field. Unfortunately, his field is magickal religion, rather than practical magick. If you are practicing magick solely as a religious effort, this book is a wonderful guide to doing so in the city. If, however, you are like myself and only seeking to augment your current spirituality with practical magick, you would do better to skim this book for useful segments and move along.
