When you read enough, it becomes hard to find an original story, but this one really is. The heroinne has a really devastating backstory of neglect and abandonment. I do think the hero got off to easy, but maybe I am too unforgiving. It is a rare treat to read a story about redemption and one that doesn't involve a billionaire.
You never know when you get a book if it’s going to be good or a waste of time. This was good. To me if you can pull out all emotions you have written something someone will read. Finished it in a day.
Wendy Smith also writes books under the name Ariadne Wayne, so I knew I was in for a good an interesting and involving read. I wasn't disappointed and loved this story. It can be read as a stand alone and does NOT have a cliff-hanger ending. It may make you cry - I did almost from the off!
Her characters are not only well developed and rounded, but are down to earth, massively likeable (if not loveable) and so very real. The story is narrated in the first person by both Adam and Lily. This allowed me to get to 'know' both characters and understand them, as well as to find out how they felt and what they thought. Their reactions, dialogue and emotions are all genuine and real.
Max and the other supporting characters are also well written, and again are normal and believable. As this is book 1 in a series I am hoping to see some of the brother's feature in future books.
I was hooked into the story immediately and found it difficult to put down. The book is so much more than your typical contemporary romance. The two main characters have a lot of issues to work through, and a lot of truths to uncover. These issues are woven through the story so well.
Another thing I love about this author is that she doesn't follow the generic formulae of so many contemporary romances. The fall in love, huge break up, get back together, HEA formula is not the basis of this book. This is so much more than that, it is a really well written story that isn't rushed or unrealistic but that takes you heart and soul on a journey of love, forgiving and hope.
If you love a good romance, and especially if you are tired of the same old, same old, then I highly recommend this book to you.
This was the first book that I've read by this author and I'm glad I downloaded it. It was a second chance romance with a loot of family secrets in the mix. I loved Adam and his brothers...his mother not so much. I was shouting at the kindle on many occasions telling them all to grow balls and give her a piece of her own medicine. I was heartbroken for Lilly, and reading about a special needs child when you have one always melts my heart. I like when authors think out the box and include subjects like this because any awareness is amazing. I look forward to book 2.
I got quite emotional reading about the horrendous things that happened to Lily. The author described it well without going into gory details.
The only thing that spoiled it for me was that Adam and Lily didn't seem to talk about whether or not he was going back to the army and this was causing them both distress so why did they not discuss it earlier ?
Scenic descriptions were very good and i only spotted one typo.
Such a moving story, even though parts were quite heartbreaking you felt a sense of hopefulness for Lily and Max. Adam has returned home after 12 years and there is a lot of deception to uncover and an old love to rekindle.
