2.0 out of 5 stars Wifi terrible, Didn’t live up to expectations

It’s quite nice to look at and it’s semi affective, but not for the price. And that’s all the positives I can say sadly. I’m returning it and replacing it with the Levoit 400s - I already had a 300s but I needed a bigger unit after moving to a bigger place with more vent pollution from other units.

The coway is Wirecutter’s top choice while the Levoit is their budget pick. They’ve got it backwards, except the Coway is way more expensive! It may work faster to clear the air.. maybe in their tests, but my experience is the detection is SO bad that it’s seemingly constantly going off for the slightest dust kick up (my cat walks by) but NOT for cooking smells (PM 2.5s!!) which is most important for health. BUT there’s no way to tell because even the wifi model doesn’t tell you anything more than β€œgood” to β€œunhealthy” air quality which is ZERO extra info to the light on top!!!

On top of that the wifi NEVER stays connected. I have to reconnect it every 24-48 hours and the app doesn’t even save the password or network. The only functionality the app has that the unit doesn’t is scheduling and that’s it!!

If you must go with the Coway do not bother with the wifi model. The app also regularly 404s and doesn’t remember my login.

Conversely, the Levoit wifi models are phenomenal with detailed PM2.5s & custom smart programming.

The Coway also is incredibly loud - both it’s lowest and especially it’s highest - it SHOOK a cabinet on its highest and sounded like it was going to explode, so I’m not surprised the fans break on these things.

On top of all this the light is unbearably bright, which you can turn off, but then what’s the point!

I also found it didn’t reduce smells much either, unlike some reviews promised.

Too bad I have to send it back! I was trying to treat myself to the β€œtop end” air purifier but it feels and operates so cheap.

Oh, last poor point - there’s nothing to help you pick this thing up and move it around - the only spot to hold it pulls the filter cover off!

It is a good purifier. You have to have extra patience for the app to accept our log-in data, but I was finally able to do it.
Good luck with that.

Very pleased with these Coways. We have them on every floor. The turn on very quickly with new odors. Great for in front of the kitty litter. The cats don't mind at all.

3.0 out of 5 stars I've already wanted to return it once. But changed my mind

Ok, so as the title states, I've already wanted to return this thing once... no twice now. For the simplistic functions of this fan, it works but for the connected portion, its a total PITA and quite honestly, unless you want to fool with it on a somewhat regular basis, the connected/wifi version is not worth it.

Straight out of the box, had a difficult time getting the device connected to our network and to the app. The instructions say that it works on both 2.4ghz and 5ghz networks but we ended up having to create a 2.4ghz network off our router (we have one that allows creation of both) just to get it to connect and even then I went around in circles with it to get it connected.

When I finally got it connected, it seemed to drop offline a couple of different times and come back up. Only once did it drop completely offline and not come back up which put me through the same setup process again. After about 30 minutes and multiple expletives later, it finally reconnected. I like to think of myself as tech inclined. I work in IT on a support desk so I have the mindset for this type of stuff. IMHO, the tech in this device is pretty cheap, its definitely not the best or even mediocre tech. If you aren't tech savvy, I'd steer very clear from the connected version of this fan/purifier.

With all of that being said, it seems to function as it should. I mostly run it on 3 during the day and on 2 at night. 3 is quite loud. 2 is enough for that white noise sound as its in our bedroom. 1, you can barely hear anything. I've had to clean what they call the "pre filter" once already which is the screen over top of the charcoal filter. I get notifications somewhat frequently that our air is "very unhealthy" but not sure how accurate it is. Given the tech for the wifi is pretty crappy, I'm not relying heavily on what this thing tells me about our air. Why? Because if I change the fan speed a couple of times in a matter of minutes, the sensor tells me that our air is "healthy."

The app is fairly simple. The controls from the app are slow to respond. If you want to change a setting, for example: mode from auto to eco then change the fan speed and turn the light off/on -on the device, this is going to take you at least 45 seconds. You press the button on your phone, wait several seconds before you can press the next button, so on and so forth.

It allegedly connects to Alexa so you can say "wake word" turn air purifier to level 2" or something such as that but I find that its severely hit or miss. Half the time Alexa tells me that the device doesn't exist.

I have until March 2nd for a return window so if this thing drops off line on me again, its going back.

Oh- also, the registration email only comes in Korean. Thankful for Google Translate!!

Buyer beware.

5.0 out of 5 stars great product, but i'm not sure the wifi version is worth it

first, i love the air purifier itself. it's quiet (unless it's on high) and the functional options (auto, eco, light indicator) are really useful. seems to have good range - if i'm cooking or spraying hairspray in the other room, it flips on pretty quickly. i live in a city with OK air quality - i didnt realize this would make such a big difference, but it does.

i opted for the wifi version and i'm not sure it was worth it. i think the regular one would have been just fine. the app it connects to has horrible reviews, but i haven't had any trouble so far. the benefit of the app is that you can control the device from your phone and some smart devices (alexa and google yes; siri/homepod no). the app has a sleep timer that the machine doesnt have, and shows you a graph of your air quality over time. i think unless you're really committed to your IoT, you can save your money and skip the wifi option because the standard version still has all the most useful features.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quiet and functions very well

Update a week later: There was an update on the software this morning, and now everything is back to normal. Hopefully things stay this way. (+1 Star)

Update 3 days later: I got a message today from this air purifier this morning saying the wifi is spotty, and I checked the app again. Lo and behold, I can control the air purifier again via app, although when I try to go to the home page and check the "product location outdoor air quality", I get a pop-up saying "There is a system error" and the display is "Unable to receive information, please try again". Still, I'm pretty happy to see the depletion % for the filters again, which honest is half the reason why I wanted wifi connection in the first place. (+1 Star)

Update 1 week later: The wi-fi function has stopped working. This morning it became no longer connected, and no matter what I try, it will no longer connect to the wifi network. Sucks this functionality only worked for a week. Stuck on "Connecting to Wi-Fi. Please Wait", and then it tells me "Internet connection of the product is not complete" (-2 stars).

Normal living generates unpleasant smells, and I typically have to open the windows every day or every other day to air out. Since getting this air purifier, I haven't felt the need to open the windows in over a week. I can't smell anything unpleasant, and at mode 1, I can't hear this thing at all. On mode 2, this is still quieter than my air conditioner, and mode 3 (the loudest), it's about the same as my air conditioner. Also no complaints about the wifi controls. (5 Stars)

4.0 out of 5 stars Love the product, but not worth paying extra for the Wifi Option

The product is great - I usually leave mine on eco mode which senses the air quality and kicks on to a higher setting when needed. You can tell it actually works because when you start cooking, or blow out a candle, etc, it kicks onto a higher setting. The app is very shotty, so I wouldnt pay extra for the wifi enabled model though..

I don't just trust a product when it says it promises to remove things from the air that I can't see or smell-- I test it!

When I purchased this, I also purchased an Air Quality Meter that could measure both particulates in the air, such as pollen, but also tVOCs. Now you may be wondering-- how do I know the meter works then? I tested that too! I made sure it responded to air vapors produced by chemical exposure, as well as by burning gas near it (I have a gas stove, which produces tVOCs simply by being used). With the meter proven working, I then tested this air filter.

After just an hour, this air filter took my normally pretty good air quality (particulates: 10-15, tVOCs of about 1) and improved the air significantly. Pollen, dust, and other particulates went down to a mere 1-2 (90% reduction!) and the air smelled notably... fresher? It was strange, not that the air smelled different so much as the air *didn't* smell at all. The change was so notable that my wife walked in and commented on it!

As for tVOCs, it wasn't as impressive (a 20% reduction in the same time) BUT let's be real-- there wasn't many tVOCs in the air to start with, so it might be less effective at scrubbing it out than if there were more. Even still, a 20% reduction in one hour? Not bad at all, and the numbers stayed as low (about 0.8) for as long as I ran the filter!

Going to order a second one
