With that caveat out of the way, I would highly recommend this product to any backyard chicken owner who has weather below freezing. When I lived in Northern California we had several nights each winter that reached freezing point or below. My chickens survived just fine without a heater through the winter. But now that I live in Denver and temperatures drop to the 20s or below for several months in the wintertime, I worry that it is just too cold for them. When the daytime temperatures stay around freezing, I also leave the heater on the low setting during the daytime.
I feel how the radiant heat adjusts itself according to how cold it is out. It does not necessarily feel warm or hot to the touch all the time. But it is clear that it cycles on and off to warm up as needed.
It looks like my chickens have a big screen TV inside their coop!
In order to mount it on the side wall of my coupe, I used nuts with bolts instead of the screws provided. The wall of my coop is pretty thin wood so there was no depth for screws to grip into. I drilled small holes so the nuts and bolts go right through and the heater panel hooks on to the side of the wall.
I definitely recommend this product
