About the Author
Review
"The spirit of Evel Knievel is alive and well in this retro game show, restructured for the storytime set. ...Kids will eat up the humor. ...All the interaction of an Hervé Tullet book, with a flying clam, a hyperactive monkey, and a cow all thrown in for good measure."
―Kirkus Reviews
"Energetic... As characters, typography, and jokes bounce around the pages--bright, silly, and loud--this one proves itself banana-worthy."
―Publishers Weekly
"High-energy...sure to be in demand during storytimes."

"Kids will line up for a chance to play."―School Library Journal --This text refers to the hardcover edition.

You know that PBS Kids spot where the pig runs around and eats things that begin with the letter "p"? Bob made that! He made a bunch of other animations for PBS Kids and helped them develop a national literacy campaign.
He has met Al Roker and Fonzie.
His stories, artwork and characters have also appeared on Nick Jr. and Noggin. He was even on Noggin, reading one of his books to Ryan, his little boy.
Bob likes to speak in the third person.
Bob has written several children's books, including New Socks, Big Plans, which was illustrated by Lane Smith, Dinosaur vs. Bedtime, Race You To Bed, and Oh Daddy.
Dinosaur vs. Bedtime was one of Amazon's Top 10 Picture Books of the year, and a Horn Book Magazine best of 2008.
He lives in Connecticut with his wife Colleen and his son, Ryan. He and Colleen own Perfectly Nice, a graphic design studio.
Bob enjoys cake.

In fact, my son's teacher occasionally allows kids to read to the class as a reward for good behavior. My son has already made a plan to read this book to his class, and he's been practicing at home. While the book may have seemed corny to me, it is great reading practice for him. He is practicing his "reading voice" and reading the proper inflection to match end punctuation marks. He thinks this book is hilarious. I asked him about the game aspect (i.e. it's not really a game even though you're supposed to say what you think will happen). He just doesn't think that matters to how fun the book is.
And since my kids are the real audience for the book, that's why I've given it five stars. And, btw, if you remove the book jacket, you'll see an embossed gold banana on the front of the hardcover. It's the "ultimate prize" in the book/game, and my kids thought it was awesome.

Illustrations by Bob Shea are vivid, colorful, and simply done. The drawings have little visual depth; they are somewhat childish and cartoon-like. Nevertheless, this is a book targeted toward younger children. They seem to see the illustrations as being similar to what they are able to do. Thus, they may find the artwork very non-threatening and quite appealing.
The story of “Crash, Splash, or Moo!” is not complex and, for older children and adults, may be somewhat silly. Adults, however, may appreciate the asides the Mr. McMonkey cannot help but utter during the narrative. Toddlers, however, seem to find the wacky Mr. McMonkey and his guessing game quite engaging; they delight in having the book read repeatedly. This is an absurd book and one holding great appeal for little ones.
