A homicide detective’s violent family history repeats itself in #1 Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melinda Leigh’s novel of murder, secrets, and retribution.
For more than twenty-five years, Philadelphia homicide detective Bree Taggert has tucked away the nightmarish childhood memories of her parents’ murder-suicide…Until her younger sister, Erin, is killed in a crime that echoes that tragic night: innocent witnesses and a stormy marriage that ended in gunfire. There’s just one chilling difference. Erin’s husband, Justin, has vanished.
Bree knows how explosive the line between love and hate can be, yet the evidence against her troubled brother-in-law isn’t adding up. Teaming up with Justin’s old friend, former sheriff’s investigator and K-9 handler Matt Flynn, Bree vows to uncover the secrets of her sister’s life and death, as she promised Erin’s children. But as her investigation unfolds, the danger hits close to home. Once again, Bree’s family is caught in a death grip. And this time, it could be fatal for her.

But first, an annoying niggle. I got to page 6 where the author included some initials to do with law enforcement but with no indication as to their meaning. Presumably if you are in an American police force you know what they mean but to the rest of us it’s meaningless. I wasted some time searching the web to find out what they mean but to no avail and I can only conclude it was put in there to show how well the author has researched her subject. They added nothing to the story or our understanding. All it did was to annoy me and it wasn’t a good start to the book. Further into the book and it happened again. Leaving a book to research what’s she’s trying to convey does nothing for the enjoyment of said book. Again I couldn’t find the meaning. I won’t bore you by listing the other instances.
Onto the none niggle part! Does that even make sense? Anyway,
I enjoyed the rest of the book, which is light and easy to read. The central characters were all pleasant and the story engaging enough to keep me interested and wanting to read the follow up, which is unpublished as I write this. It certainly has potential as a new series. In fact I would go as far to say I am looking forward to seeing how everyone gets on with the new direction their lives are taking them.
The book would have had a higher rating except for the ludicrous situation of a character being kept alive at the end for absolutely no reason. Don’t get me wrong I was pleased he wasn’t killed off but a reason why he wasn’t would have been good. Even the writer couldn’t dream anything much up. It took the shine off what would otherwise be a decent ending.

This story had me trying to figure the story out, who was guilty and of what. There was the odd bit that was predictable but even then it wasn't bad. I enjoyed the story and the fact it was written from multiple perspectives. Bree's and others implicated. If like me you tend to figure out what's happening quite early on this one will have you questioning yourself throughout.
Ready to pick up the next in the series after reading books 0.5 (short story) and book one (cross heart).

The main protagonist, Bree Taggert, is an exceptional character. The eldest of three siblings, Bree, aged 8 years old at the time, tried to protect her sister and baby brother from the wrath of their father. Even though she succeeded, she couldn't save her mother.
In the second chapter, Bree is grown up and is working as a Homicide Detective. She receives an urgent call from her sister who sounded in fear for her life. Bree travels to Grey's Hollow, where her sister lived---it is also the place where Bree was born. Would she ever be able to get away from that place?
No more spoilers. I'm sure most fans of Melinda Leigh's books will love this book. I can't wait to read Book 2.
5 stars from this happy reader.

Matt may be broken but he is not going to let that stop him, he knows Justin is innocent and is determined to prove it any way he can. And if he manages to win the heart of the beautiful, kick ass detective too...he can hope!
Bree and Matt are a fantastic team, they each have a unique understanding of the other and together they prove unstoppable when it comes to crime solving. There are also lots of sparks, but do they lead to more....

When detective Bree Taggert receives a phone call from her sister saying she's in trouble Bree drops everything to drive to her home. When she arrived she gets the worst possible news. Her sister has been murdered and her husband is missing.
Trying to ignore the chilling similarities of her own childhood she vows to do everything she can to find out what happened.
This is a great thriller that keeps you guessing til the end.
I loved this book and I'm looking forward to reading the next one.
