"Go to New York City and help those boys."
When David Wilkerson heard those words in his heart late one night, he was dumbfounded. The boys in question were members of a violent gang and on trial for murder. He himself was a young country preacher settled comfortably in a little mountain church in Pennsylvania. What could God possibly expect him to accomplish?
But those words took root in his heart, and he knew he had to go. Risking everything--his career, his marriage, even his life--he found himself walking the streets of New York City and sharing the gospel with the most violent gangs and drug users, sometimes at knife point.
With over 15 million copies sold, this is the powerful, riveting true story of how God can use the most unlikely of people to do the impossible--and save those we think are beyond saving.

From the Back Cover
"Go to New York City and help those boys."
David Wilkerson was taken aback when he heard God speak those words to him late one night as he stared at a picture of seven young gang members on trial for murder. He was simply a country preacher at a small church in Pennsylvania. What impact could he possibly make--especially in New York City?
But God continued to lay those boys on his heart, and he sensed this was his calling. So he uprooted himself from his comfortable life to pursue the dangerous mission God was calling him to. Not long after, he was moving among the most violent gangs and drug users in New York, sharing the Gospel.
This captivating story describes the founding of Teen Challenge--an inner-city ministry that today maintains residential and crisis counseling centers around the globe--and the man who obeyed God's summons to reach out to the least of these. It is also the story of how God can use anyone to save those we may think are beyond saving.
David Wilkerson (1931-2011) founded Teen Challenge and World Challenge (www.worldchallenge.org) and was the founding pastor of Times Square Church in New York City. He authored more than forty books, including the bestselling The Cross and the Switchblade and Have You Felt Like Giving Up Lately? With a particular longing to encourage pastors, he traveled around the globe. On the day of his death, he was still ministering.

The tale is incredible, and very relevant today - even so much as it was all those long years ago. Age plays it's part in the retrospect of a tale that is at once austere and inspirational, for it is as old as this and yet has not aged a day. One to treasure in the heart, and affect the mind and the hand.

I need to start by saying that the book was really good. The reason for my one star review is actually due to Amazon's inaccurate description of the book. Amazon.ca said it was 173 pages long but it was only 34 pages long (including the cover). I called Amazon to request that they correct the description. If and when I see the description updated then I will adjust the rating to match the quality of the book (with no deductions for the inaccurate description).

Gone but not forgotten

Already much reviewed and such a powerful account: I bought this book in 1963 when it came out. I found it to be a fascinating tale of the culture clash between the middle class priest (David Wilkerson, 1931-2011) from a comfortable background and the New York gangs he first encountered in 1958. The fact that he found the way in - they let him penetrate their culture - and his subsequent work developing the Teen Challenge charity is modestly related. One of his best known converts is Nicky Cruz and it's worth looking up his remembering his mentor in an interview that's on line. I bought this copy because I can't find my original and unfortunately, it's not quite as advertised, being a special student edition. I don't know if that means it's edited or redacted in some way, but I could not find the passage I was looking for. That may be because although I read this several times that was a long time ago. Books from yesteryear that 'remain' in print sometimes get reworked in a bid to keep up with the moving goalposts of political correctness. I noticed, on re-reading the 'famous five' stories that certain words are no longer used. I won't put an example here just in case; my review of 'Prester John' pointed out the use of three pejoratives on one page and got 'disappeared' by Amazon because I quoted them. If I find my original cross and switchblade - or someone else's - I'll read it carefully to see. If you're not familiar with this work yet, it's worth reading if only because it so neatly tells of the time in which it was both acted out and written - all before JFK's untimely death and the changes that brought to America.

Inspiring classic

Absolute classic full of inspiration. This book should not be read merely as a record of events but rather as a textbook to provide guidance on how vision emerges, develops and then works itself out. What Wilkerson did in these pages was to teach how working with the Holy Spirit provides the best basis for mission because it is not so much about what we can achieve when we walk with Jesus, but rather what Jesus can achieve when we walk with Him. A great story, regardless of age, this should not only be on ones shelf but rather pulled through by hand.

Great easy to read testimony

This is a great volume of an older book. The testimony is inspiring and uplifting and I would think would make interesting reading for anyone. The true story of how. Preacher went to New York City and hanged the lives of gangs forever through his love for them , andGod. it tells of the risks he took and how he went out of his way to demonstrate his love , he certainly "walked many extra miles" in the name of his God.

A great, great story of God performing astounding things through the weak and humble..
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on October 5, 2013Verified Purchase
I have read this book 3 times over the years and the effect is as great every time. It's amazing how through the ministry of a humble man of God (David Wilkerson), so many hardened criminals came to become themselves shining lights for Jesus. A truly timeless account and a must read for Christians every where.
