A little short for me but a lot of action. Zombie lovers should really like this book. Definitely should read the first one first as it just as good.

First, the compliments. Dirk Patton writes well. There are some random grammatical and comma-placement errors, but these emphatically do NOT detract from the author's ability to set and narrate terrifically captivating battle scenes. So far, so good. Unfortunately, the Author also falls prey to a standard trope of Zombie novels, which can be characterized as follows: "Oh, look, our Hero is in danger. Phew, he barely manages to survive that attack--of course, it took a Deus ex Machina to do so, but OK, it's the Zombie Apocalypse after all; one Deux ex is reasonable. OK, so now he and hsi sidekick have managed to find shelter. There are even *other* good-guy survivors to help survive the ZA; there is strength in numbers, so that's good, right? Of course it is! But wait--now that things are relatively comfortable, something really quite ridiculous has to happen to put our Hero back in harm's way. Yup, and sure enough, EVERYONE of the good guys EXCEPT the sidekick(s) is killed in the latest inexplicable disaster. Fortunately, the Hero and Sidekick(s) always survive to escape and try again. Wash, Rinse, Repeat." In the case of the first two books here (spoiler warning), John, Our Hero, manages to save the Babe, Rachel, and they go through well-narrated Hell to get to safety--an Air Force Base in Tennessee. The entire US coastline, East, West, and South, has been devastated by the zombie virus , but a few areas in Tennessee-Kentucky and other midwestern spots have escaped and are fortifying. Why are they fortifying? Because the zombies from the coasts, although mindless beasts, have somehow decided to march IN UNISON against the last remaining US uninfected strongholds. Wait. They can't think...so how can they march in numberless hordes more tightly organized than most modern armies could achieve? Another jarring moment occurs when the Air Force Base safe haven is suddenly subjected to a *second* wave of zombie conversions coming from nowhere, even though the virus supposedly lasted only the first two days. WTF--how could this happen in reality? The answer is clear: if the author had NOT created this absurdity, he would have returned home to his wife in Arizona by the end of book 3 at least, thus depriving the eager readers of at least 12 books (I believe he's up to #15 or #16 by now). Another absurdity is that the male zombies move very slowly indeed--think Romero zombies all the way--but the *female* zombies move lightning-quick; in fact, even quicker than they could when they were alive. These are just a few cases. After a while the absurd plot devices pile on top of one another and frankly become quite tiresome, at least to me. I could recount numerous others plot holes, but the above should be sufficient to make the point. *I* require a story arc that satisfies the rules of logic, not just writing dramatic battle scenes. From the first two books, this series, however compelling in other ways, clearly fails. Note that the Author is HARDLY alone in this sin--in fact, MOST zombie apocalypse writers fail in the same way. Not to pick on them exclusively, but, as examples, Nicolas Sanbury Smith's and Timothy Long's Z-Risen ZA series have exactly the same problem. The heroes begin to gain a safe haven, then BOOM, a deus ex machina renders their situation perilous again. Wash, Rinse, Repeat. For those of you who have read this far, I suggest that the ONLY ZA story arc that is REMOTELY suspension-of-belief believable is John Ringo's unparalleled Under a Graveyard Sky quadrilogy. If you want something that makes sense, RUN, not walk, to read that series. The only downside is that you'll then be left with a definite unscratchable itch when it comes to other ZA series, because of the literally unbelievable Deus Ex's that the authors must resort to. For the record, I admit that I appear to be in very much the minority here; most other readers appear to be content NOT to read critically, but to just enjoy seeing the Hero escape from impossible situation after impossible situation. In the case of Dirk Patton, I will end by saying that, despite these to-my-mind fatal flaws, I am finding it hard to resist purchasing volume 3 of this series, simply because of Patton's excellent tale-telling skills. So there you have it--the good, the bad, and the ugly. YMMV.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, extraordinary post-apocalyptic series

The Voodoo Plague series by Dirk Patton is an original, character-filled, action-packed, compelling post-apocalyptic tale. The first book in series, Voodoo Plague, starts with a businessman, John Chase, experiencing some disturbing events while in a hotel in Atlanta. He rescues a woman, Rachel, from an attack and they quickly go on the run as they realize that people have become rage-infected due to a bioterrorist attack. They decide to head to Arizona to find John’s wife, Katie, and quickly get immersed in not only survival, but also helping others survive. Book 2 has John recalled to active duty along with Rachel and Dog.
There are several unique elements that make the series stand out from the ordinary.
1. The “zombies” are not undead; they are regular people who have been infected with a bioterrorism virus. Females are fast, 28 days later rage-filled creatures, and some exhibit intelligence, while males form slow shambling Romero-type herds.
2. This is not a story about an average Joe rising to the occasion -- the central character in the series, John Chase, is a highly trained ex-military superhero. He keeps going and going, like the Energizer bunny, and is skilled to the extent that the reader has to suspend disbelief at some points. But being a superhero has its benefits, and it allows John to charge from action-packed situation to situation, which makes for a tense roller-coaster ride -- bringing us to point 3.
3. Action is non-stop. Infected! Nukes! White Supremists! Tornados! Slavers! Floods! Train Wrecks! Plane Crashes! Redneck Shit-kickers! Rescues! Bioterrorism! Serial Killers! Invading Forces! Helicopter Crashes! There is seriously no breathing space ever in this series, which means there is never a logical breaking point when you can go to sleep or leave the book for a while.
4. The characters, including those in supporting roles, are all interesting. I didn’t much like John at first, as he is bit macho in the first book, but the other characters caught my attention, especially Dog. Rachel, the rather clichéd “stripper with heart of gold” (and smarts too) is tough and resilient and likeable. Crawford, Jackson, Roach, and other characters add depth to the story. Though you don’t want to get attached to them….these are normal mortals unlike John!
The Voodoo Plague series is good fun, and I recommend that you get the entire set, call in sick to work, and tell your family that you need some personal space. Then, curl up in a dark room and enjoy the roller-coaster ride as John, Rachel, and Dog try to survive the action-packed events in Dirk Patton’s extraordinary, post-apocalyptic world.

Let me start by saying that I've been on a ZA/ end of the world storyline kick for about a year or so now, and although this is not my favorite series it is #2 on my list. First off the characters are great and you really feel for them. They're genuine, and likable. You care about them and what happens to them.

The writing and editing of both books has been great so far. Getting ready to start book 3 now and will continue with the series after that. I love the fact that John and Rachel have saved each others butts numerous times and not just the male character saving the day all of the time.

My only complaint, which is trivial at best, is that there are so many zombies that it sometimes seems impossible to survive the onslaught. Other than that , I love the series and recommend it to anybody who likes this genre. A few other authors and series I'd recommend you check out is extinction cycle by Smith and the arisen series by Michael Stephen Fuchs, 2 more great series.

I have now read the first two books in the series, reading book two, start to finish nearly in one sitting.

I have to say that this book was just impossible to put down. I was so impressed with the first book of the series that I purchased book 2 before I finished the first.

The character development is well done, drawing you in from the very beginning, which left me feeling invested in the characters. I especially appreciate that the main male character isn't just an everyday man who suddenly becomes Rambo-like. He is a well trained Army Ranger, which lends credence to his abilities. While being a military machine, Mr Patton has also imparted in him a heavy dose of compassion and humor which makes him even more likeable. And the interaction between him and the lead female character is enjoyable and innocent as he attempts to trek across the country on mission to get to his wife, while being committed in bringing his sidekick along not only for her benefit in keeping her safe, but because she has proved to be a valuable fighting partner, saving his bacon on several occasions. I won't even get started on their German Sheperd other then to say this is one dog I would want by my side in the apocalypse!

This book is so packed with action that there is barely room to breathe, not for the characters and not for the reader. But the solid action does not take away from the story which I've found rare in other similar books.

The fact that the infected are not your typical zombie is also a welcome twist from the mass of zombie based novels flooding the literary world. In fact, I'm not sure if you should call them zombies at all? These are instantaneously changed, living individuals. And as we have found in the beginning pages of the second installment...they are evolving.

All in all, this is a well written, well developed series, offering full length novels for each installment that has a minimal amount of fluff and filler. Each installment flows seamlessly into the next, reading as if written as one, without adding in back history from the previous book in the series, which I appreciate. It has so much action that it leaves you breathless as your own adrenaline is pumped up and a few scenes that will have you saying"OMG...NOOO!!!

Very highly recommend this series. I will gladly read the entire series.

Great writer. Great story. I care about the characters, they are believable and I can see the action as it happens. I highly recommend this series and the author.

So, that was my review after reading this first book. I have now read all of the books on my kindle, pre-ordered #8, purchased all of them in soft cover and even purchased the audio book from Audible. I am waiting for all of them to come to Audible because I love being read to. They do need a different narrator though. Am I obsessive? Just a wee bit. I have read the series 3 times so far and each time it gets better. The characters are believable and I truly care about them. John is a great person and only wants to find his wife. Rachel just wants to survive and realizes that her best chance lies with John. Dog? Well, Dog is just really cool. I cannot recommend this series enough. Yes, there is violence, some pretty graphic. But they are fighting infected people trying to eat them for God’s sake! If you cannot deal with very well described violence, or a lot of military scenes, then go elsewhere for your entertainment. I can't wait to read each book but then I’m distressed when I finish one.

You must read them in order. That is the only way you will understand the story line and the world that the characters are trying to live in. Most books end and the next picks up at that spot. Some scenes in the later books have brought tears to my eyes because I have grown to truly care about the people who inhabit this world.

I would recommend reading the John Chase story after reading at least one of the Voodoo books. This will allow you to get to know him a little in this current world and understand some of what has made him into the man that he has become. Other things will fall into place.

If you do not like “Zombies”. If you do not really care about “military” scenes, descriptions, etc. If you are not particularly fond of “apocalypse” stories please move on instead of leaving a bad review. I know that not everyone likes everything but just move on. Please, this author does not deserve it. Nor do these stories.

Another kick ass read by Patton.

This one has John Chase, ex Delta Force operator, back in the military. He's been recalled by Presidential decree.

He and Rachel fought their way out of Atlanta, rescued some Air Force Personnel fought a band of civilians with murder on their minds and ended up at Arnold Air Force Base in Tennessee. Chase doesn't want to become a cog in the wheel of the big green machine.

Chase is a hightly trained and very valuable cog with the Delta Force Operator as part of his resume. But his priority is to get to Phoenix and look for his wife.

Rachel is in complete agreement and will do whatever Chase decides to do. She's got his back one hundred percent.

Col Crawford tells Chase he can get him on a C-40 leaving the next day for Davis Monthan Air force Base in Tucson. and that there is a C-130 departing from Davis Monthan 24 hours after he lands in Tuscon. There will be a green beret team on that plane and Crawford wants Chase to lead the team to pick up two scientists who specialize in nerve and biological agent weapons. They need to be brought to Ft. Campbell.

Crawford tells Chase that if Chase will give him his word to be on that flight he will have 24 hours to find his wife in Arizona. Chase gives his word.

So begins another great read.

This one has Chase, Rachel, Dog, Arnold AFB overrun with infected, Major Masuka, Anderson, Mayo, a coward named Roach who's also a physcopathic killer, a group of religious fanatices led by a reverend who's a self proclaimed messiah, a woman bus driver with a group of kids, the infected, the females who are much faster and smarter than the shambling males, a captured Chase, a girl named Nora, Murfreesboro, a Chase still trying to get to Arizona and he and Rachel fighting for their lives.

Just a great read. Five Stars and then some.

I'm going to post this under each of the Voodoo Plague books, since you really have to judge the series as a whole if you're going to read them all. I had finished another zombie apocalypse series several weeks ago that I felt set the bar really high. I'd had some disappointments in the interim and, being somewhat new to the genre, was getting discouraged that there may just not be that many well written zombie stories out there. This series gave me new hope.

The first book was a bit slow (having just shortly come away from the climax of the previous series), but the second book really took off and hooked me with the action. The third book slowed down to develop the characters a bit, which didn't disappoint me, because I was committed to the series by that time. The fourth book got a bit more tedious - the story line fractured, and it was difficult to get very far into any one scene before it switched to another (at times, essentially unrelated) scene. It started to feel like when my babysitter used to watch a soap opera one day, then come back two weeks later, watch the same soap opera, and only 30 minutes had passed in "soap opera land", even though the show had been on for 10 days in the interim. Things started to pull together again in book 5, as the plot lines began to intersect again, and book 6 did a nice job of bringing everything (/everyone) back together.

So, while I realize the comments above don't necessarily represent a "glowing" review of these books, but I still gave the series 5 stars because the overall body of work is engaging, entertaining, and well-crafted. The characters are fun to follow, the plot lines twist in interesting an unexpected ways, and the writing flows naturally and comfortably for the reader. In the final analysis, I'm anxiously awaiting book 7, so how could I not give it a great rating?

I love this series. Just finished book 2, will be purchasing book 3 the moment i submit this review. In book 1, i loved how when something good happened, it wasn't always followed by something bad. An example being when they found a large cache of weapons, they almost immediately had it stolen from them. In different stories, this may have happened. In that book, the main character kicked the crap out of the would be thieves and was able to keep his supply of guns and ammo. I just really liked that about book 1.
Book 2, I would definitely say things have gotten much worse. Good things basically never happen in this story. It's okay, probably in a zombie apocalypse that's how it would really happen. The book is nearly impossible to put down. It starts immediately where book 1 left off and is action packed from start to finish. The first 12 or so chapters in the military base are basically amazing, and while reading it i desperately wanted to see that part played out in a movie or on tv. I remember thinking i don't know how this book can be better than these 12 chapters. Well, the action continued. The story just pushed right along and there was never a dull moment. I really really hope this series stays this good the whole way through. Seems impossible to think it will, but 2 books deep i am so happy that i stumbled across this series. I hope if you took the time to read this review, you know that you should keep reading. I'll stop now, time to buy book 3!

John, Rachel and Dog continue their trek to Arizona. While in Tenn, John is recalled to the service and promoted to the rank of major. It doesn't take long before the zombie hoards overrun the base and people set off on their own. Continuing west, the trio find themselves fighting for survival from both zombies and humans - almost non-stop. They meet others en route who join them and eventually end up in a town of friendlies. John takes charge and organizes their defenses. Thousands of zombies arrive and the friendlies fight to the death - providing time for others to escape on a train going west.

The story ends before the battle is finished, leaving readers to buy the next book in the series to see the outcome. I'm going to be one of them and look forward to seeing what happens to the trio.
