About David C. Baker
I was referred to in the NY Times as "the expert's expert."
I was born in Michigan, but lived in San Miguel Acatan, Guatemala with a tribe of Mayan indians until I was eighteen years old, after which I moved to the United States. I spent six years in graduate school, earning an advanced degree in ancient languages and theology. I've taught at the undergraduate and graduate level.
I managed a publishing house and mail order book house from 1983-1988 and then owned and ran a marketing firm from 1988-1994.
Since 1994, I've been an author, speaker, and advisor, providing business insight to expert marketing firms worldwide. I have consulted with dozens of Fortune 500 companies and 1,000+ marketing firms.
I live in Nashville, TN with my wife Julie. We have two grown boys: Jonathan lives in Atlanta and Nathan lives in Nashville. Both are married and have children.
I taught motorcycle racing, love photography, enjoy aviation (I'm a helicopter and airplane pilot), and spend a lot of time in woodworking.
I speak to, write for, and consult with the expertise industry: marketing, advertising, PR, design, digital, software engineering, and consulting.
My work has been featured multiple times in the Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, Forbes, Inc. Magazine, USA Today, and two dozen others.
I am a frequent speaker at multiple TEDx events, Harvard, and dozens of conferences each year.

“What’s so compelling about Mr. Baker is that he’s an expert on being an expert.” —Carl Richards, New York Times
The Business of Expertise, David’s previous book, set the stage by suggesting a narrow focus and then capitalizing on the patterns that emerge from repeated application of your expertise. This book builds on that work by suggesting how to craft a consulting practice with those insights.
Rather than a broad philosophical treatise, this book is a very practical how-to that meets practitioners in the field. It’s a handbook on the nuts and bolts of application in the actual world of helping your clients in a sustainable way.
Essentially, it’s a field manual that helps you build a $1M+ per person consulting practice.
