I didn’t realize that this is a book based on a movie, probs wouldn’t have bothered if I’d known . I don’t really remember the movie , so the story was pretty much new to me. I would say it’s verbatim a summery or “cliffs notes” of the film. Watch the movie, Robin Williams is amazing

2.0 out of 5 stars Dead Poets Society - a great film, but a disappointing book
Reviewed in Canada on April 5, 2001
I've watched the movie several times in German before we watched it in our English class. I think, the movie is great. It makes you feel as if you were part of some of the scenes, because the director uses good methods to set the film into action. The actors are doing a good job, because you can see how they feel and you can identify with the students. The story is very exciting and interesting and shows you what school was like in these days. It makes you understand that you should enjoy life instead of working and studying so hard that you get exhausted. We read the book too, but I find it very disappointing, because it is almost exactly like the film, except that the emotions of the characters aren't shown that well. If I had been the author, I would have put more detail and more emotions into the story to make it more interesting, if you watched the film before. Anyways, if you watch the film in English class, it is very helpful to have the book to read the scenes you watched before, because you get a better understanding of them. In the end I can just recommend the movie and say: "CARPE DIEM!"

3.0 out of 5 stars Film better than book
Reviewed in Canada on April 5, 2001
I watched the film and I was very impressed by the strong conflict between the authority and the freeminded people. The director filled the scenes with beauty, love and humor but also with violence and the cold and strictly ruled atmosphere at Welton Academy. Mr. Keating tries to get the boys out of that coldness and to make them come up with their own thoughts. But he underestimates the danger and the consequences are horrible, because he and the boys don't have enough power to revolt against the authority symbolized by the parents and Mr. Nolan. But nevertheless Keating changes their lives, in a positive way for all of them. I like the the film, but I would have prefered to watch it without stopping it every minute and analyzing all the scenes. Carpe diem!

3.0 out of 5 stars Dead Poets Society - worth to read, worther to watch
Reviewed in Canada on April 5, 2001
I've watched the movie in school (part for part, because our teacher loves it to interrupt) and I've read the book,...well... at least not the whole, but I can say that watching the movie "Dead Poets Society" is really more fascinating and exciting than reading it. You get a deeper impression of the characters, of their feelings and thoughts. And of course the atmosphere of the school, Welton Academy, is a must and you do not find that in the book. With Robin Williams as the mainactor the movie has a great "Hollywood-potential" and that makes it a lot worther to watch. It's quality. It's a dramatical story (-although it has it's fun-moments-) about thought-control by school and ruling parents.
But,... enjoy it yourself!

2.0 out of 5 stars Backstage pass to the movie
Reviewed in Canada on April 5, 2001
I've seen the film several times, until we started to read the book in English class. My opinion on the book a bit split, because I never read a book that was as close to the movie as this. Normally films are made after books and you can see the diffrence of book and movie . Then you can decide which one you like most or wether the film was giving back the theme of the book. This book is as if you were watching the film , but you can't see the emotions of the actors, which are very well shown.
If someone is watching the film and doesn't understand all of it , the book might be helpfull. I would recommend to watch the movie and then , in addition, read the book, because in some scenes it can be like a backstage pass to the movie.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing book to a great movie!
Reviewed in Canada on February 27, 2001
I just wanted to say that the film is much better than the book. In the film the characters of the persons are much better described and you can understand them better. It's more fun to watch the movie, than reading the book. It's really interesting to see how the boys react and how they live their lifes. in the film there are much more emotions and you can sympathize with the boys. So there is no better thing to do than watch the film!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book, better movie.

Hi there. Just to please my English-teacher :) : I've read the book at school/home. We also watched the movie, and in my opinion, the emotions of the characters and all the atmosphere of the story are better caught here. The music is a big advantage . If you just read the book you will fail to entirely understand the dramatic moments . You can't right imagine what the actors perform. It's more impressive to watch the movie!

3.0 out of 5 stars The film is much better
Reviewed in Canada on April 5, 2001
I think the book "Dead Poets Society" is a good choice, if you have not watched the film . Because the film is much better than the book and if you have watched the film you will not like the book because in the book there is not the athmosphere that is shown in the film. So if you have watched the film you can better "Seize the day" than to read the book!
Carpe Diem--------Seize the day!!!!
