"If you want to stay, you have to play the game…"
Steele O’Brien is everything I hate in hockey players.
He’s cocky, brooding, antagonistic.
I played his game, learned his secrets.
But that was before I found out he’s my new stepbrother.
Now we’re at college together, and I can’t escape him.
Or his demons.
It seems that, for him, the game isn’t over.
He says I'm his to play with. His to torment.
And he's determined to not only get under my skin, but carve his name into it.

About the author

S. Massery is a dark romance author who infuses all her stories with a dash of suspense. She lives in Western Massachusetts with her dog, Alice.
Before adventuring into the world of writing, she went to college in Boston and held a wide variety of jobs—including working on a dude ranch in Wyoming (a personal highlight). She has a love affair with coffee and chocolate. When S. Massery isn’t writing, she can be found devouring books, playing outside with her dog, or trying to make people smile.

Steele’s book started with a literal bang and I was here for it. Aspen decides to go to a party during the summer break and gets pulled into playing quite the interesting game. Everyone is to draw from a deck of cards that will match up partners. The card that they receive comes with certain amount of boundaries but the card she grabbed, the joker, has none.
Steele also pulls the card and what follows… I definitely needed to fan to cool off. They have one night together with no names and just giving into their deepest desires. Six months later they are reunited when Aspen transfers schools and lets just say that things get very interesting when Aspen meets her new step-brother, Steele.
Their relationship takes a dark turn into quite the journey that I buckled in for. I loved getting into Steele’s mind and seeing how his devious mind works. I knew that this would be intense from the glimpses we got from him but I didn’t expect his to be so possessive and jealous when it came to a certain lady. There was no better match for him then Aspen. She isn’t afraid to go toe to toe with him. He isn’t afraid to push her boundaries.
This book will be living rent free in my head for a while. Now I’ll just be here waiting for Mile’s book and the FMC that I definitely didn’t see coming but I’m SO excited to see how this is going to play out for them.
If your reading this, trust me just read it!
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ *top notch*
Let me start off by saying the ONLY reason why this isn’t a full 5 stars across the board is simply because Greyson Devereux continues to have me in a choke hold, and I don’t think it will be letting up anytime soon! Buuuuut Steele O’Brien DEFINITELY comes in at a solid close 2nd! 🥵
I really enjoyed seeing how Aspen & Steele’s journey played out! Watching how every single decision they made (together and on their own 😈🐍) paved their path & helped solidify an outcome they both knew wasn’t up for negotiation. I actually also loved how Sara took the time to develop their stories independently on top of their story together so we were able to get the full picture! And let’s just get one thing clear, the spice!? Juuuust absolute Chef’s kiss from start to finish! 😚🤌🏼
Overall I think this was a fantastic addition to the series & just makes me even more excited for book 3!!

I did love the story though and I cannot wait for the next one in the series 😍

Okay, I loved Brutal Obsession, gave it five stars and I was so hyped for this book and immediately everything was too familiar. Both Steele and Greyson have rich daddies, both of them chase her through the pines, both of them have a locker scene moment, both Violet and Aspen get kidnapped…. I could go on.
I feel like if I hadn’t read brutal obsession I would’ve given this a five star but it honestly lacked anything original in my option :(
Still love S. Massery though, and I will keep reading her work but I am gutted with the outcome.
Positives:
Great smut throughout
Aspen had a good origin story

Steele is obsessive, possessive, broody, a hockey god, and gives no flocks. He has certain tastes and seems to be bored with life. I loved his attitude and his darker side. Aspen was a good girl, follow directions, made the grades, and tried to stay invisible to get by. Then when they meet it's explosive and exciting. I loved the twists that are thrown into their story. Just the emotional roller-coaster that Aspen took me on was heartbreaking and heartwarming. I loved her growth thru this book. Steele was the perfect anti-hero. He was crass, devious, and got what he wanted always. They were drawn to each other no matter how hard they fought against it.
If you like authors like Becca Steele, and Tracy Lorraine you will love S. Massery. This book can be read as a stand-alone, but I recommend reading Brutal Obsession to catch all the characters in this series. Happy Reading!!!
