I burst out laughing when this item was delivered, because it was the smallest little book I had ever seen! Took me about 20 minutes to read it. Good story, but I was so surprised that this book was so little. I guess from now on I should check the dimensions of books I order online🤣

I have loved everything Maile Meloy has published and was delighted to come across this Kindle single. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but if you're terrified of vermin, this might give you nightmares. It's not a gross-out story, exactly, but there is a psychological horror element to the tale. I've found myself telling other people about this story several times, which means it has stuck with me longer than most contemporary short stories.

I can't say anything about the plot without spoiling it, but I can say that it could have been my neighborhood, and I had a recent situation that was similar. The story is set in Austin, Texas, which happens to be where I live. Good characterizations and plot.

This is a creepy, enjoyable story about a single mom trying to salvage a less-than-ideal situation with some next door hoarders. It should have been part of a collection of short stories instead of an extremely short novella, but a fun, one-evening read non-the-less.
