Loved this book. Carey writes from a place of vulnerability and honesty which immediately draws you in and makes what he is talking about relatable on a human level. What I appreciated most about this book was that not only did he identify areas that resonated with me and my own challenges but he offers hope in the way of tangibles that are immediately applicable to life. The chapter on cynicism hit me right in the kisser. It was like looking into a mirror but then becoming equipped to change what you see. I recommend this to any human being.

I’m not the biggest fan of Christian books - I normally struggle to get past the first few chapters and soon realise the author will fail to deliver on whatever they have promised. Not so with Didn’t See It Coming. I devoured the book in two evenings and will now go back and re-read the chapters that I feel apply to me at the moment. The author is funny, astute and wise. He makes the leap of not only being able to describe the challenges that everyone will face, but also gives practical advice about how to avoid them or to get out of them. For that reason the book is more like a survival guide that you will keep referring back to, than a book you read once and leave on your bookshelf. You can easily dip into the section that you relate most to as a stand-alone. The ending didn’t quite make it for me, but the rest of the book was so good it easily deserves 5 stars.

As Carey navigates through the seven different challenges, there are always enough moments that get you nodding along in recognition of what he is saying. So whether you believe that any of the challenges relate to you specifically at this point in time, or you notice the signs in others, you will want to keep picking the book up again to re-read chapters when the time does arrive.

Although Carey is Canadian, with a predominantly US readership, as an Englishman I was reminded only very occasionally of the stretch of water between us. The seven challenges cross any cultural divide there might be, and Carey has thrown a bright light on to them.
