Meet Doug, an ordinary kid who doesn't like hugs, in this fun and exuberant story that aims to spark discussions about bodily autonomy and consent - from author Carrie Finison.
Doug doesn't like hugs. He thinks hugs are too squeezy, too squashy, too squooshy, too smooshy. He doesn't like hello hugs or good-bye hugs, game-winning home run hugs or dropped ice cream cone hugs, and he definitely doesn't like birthday hugs. He'd much rather give a high five - or a low five, a side five, a double five, or a spinny five. Yup, some people love hugs; other people don't. So how can you tell if someone likes hugs or not? There's only one way to find out: Ask! Because everybody gets to decide for themselves whether they want a hug or not.

Really good book. Hilariously written. Can be enjoyed by adults and kids. Discusses personal boundaries in a very light way. Best book on personal boundaries that we have read.

This book is great because it work for people who might be neurodivergent and just to teach kids to ask permission before they touch someone

My daughter loves this book! We bought it as a way to talk to our kids about respecting others personal space, but my daughter loves it because it's such a fun story. We read it several times a day for a solid week.

Although not directly about autism or sensory processing difficulties. It highlights the importance of personal choices and the importance of saying no when we don’t like something or are not comfortable. This is one of the key things I teach my preschool children it’s ok to have independently choice.

A lovely book about consent for young kids
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on October 7, 2022Verified Purchase
This was a lovely introduction for my almost 3 year old to the idea that you can't just hug/touch people without asking permission. It's lighthearted, has bright pictures, and suggests alternatives to hugging. Highly recommend it.
