ALLEN SAY is one of the most beloved artists working today. Allen Say was born in Yokohama, Japan, in 1937. He dreamed of becoming a cartoonist from the age of six, and, at age twelve, apprenticed himself to his favorite cartoonist, Noro Shinpei. For the next four years, Say learned to draw and paint under the direction of Noro, who has remained Say's mentor. Say illustrated his first children's book -- published in 1972 -- in a photo studio between shooting assignments. For years, Say continued writing and illustrating children's books on a part-time basis. But in 1987, while illustrating THE BOY OF THE THREE-YEAR NAP (Caldecott Honor Medal), he recaptured the joy he had known as a boy working in his master's studio. It was then that Say decided to make a full commitment to doing what he loves best: writing and illustrating children's books. Since then, he has written and illustrated many books, including TREE OF CRANES and GRANDFATHER'S JOURNEY, winner of the 1994 Caldecott Medal. He is a full-time writer and illustrator living in Portland, Oregon.

Allen Say is one of my favourite modern children's illustrators

I read the sequel to this (last year, I think) and have wanted to read this one ever since. Allen Say is one of my favourite modern children's illustrators. This is a picture book with a large amount of text suitable for older children to adults. It's a wonderful tale of the author's life from birth until he sets off for America. Obviously,the focus is on his passion for drawing. Very interesting and well-written memoir.

Ich hatte vom selben Autor schon den autobiographischen Roman "Die Schüler des Mangameisters" gelesen, der mir gut gefallen hatte. "Drawing from Memory" ist im Grunde die gleiche Geschichte, diesmal allerdings als Bilderbuch ausgeführt. Es geht um die Kinder- und Jugendjahre von Allen Say, der im Japan der Nachkriegszeit aufwächst, sein künstlerisches Talent entdeckt und das große Glück hat, auf einige Menschen zu treffen, die sein Talent würdigen und ihn fördern. Wichtig ist dabei vor allem ein Mangameister, der ihn als Lehrling aufnimmt. Das Buch hat mich sehr beeindruckt, weil Allen Say schon in sehr jungen Jahren sehr selbstständig durchs Leben gehen musste. Die graphische Gestaltung ist traumhaft schön. Allen Says Bilder zeigen etwas vom Leben in Japan in der Nachkriegszeit. Das Buch enthält aber auch Photos, Federzeichnungen und Skizzen aus dem Leben des Künstlers. Es ist ein Buch darüber, wie man seinen eigenen Weg im Leben findet. Es zeigt, dass man etwas wagen und auch manchmal angestrengt dafür arbeiten muss, wenn man etwas erreichen will. Mit dieser Thematik ist es aber noch nichts für Kinder. Es ist ein Buch für Erwachsene, die sich nicht albern vorkommen, wenn sie mit einem Bilderbuch erwischt werden.

I loved this autobiographical story written and illustrated by Allen Say. The double meaning of "drawing" in the title is especially satisfying. Say had such an unusual upbringing growing up in pre- and post-WWII Japan and post-WWII on the western US coast. It is so inspiring to see how his dedication to and drive for his art drawing shaped the person he is today - a master artist. I love that the book was written as a tribute to his mentor, Noro Shinpei who nurtured Say's talent when many others in his life did not.

I use Allen Say in my third grade classroom as an author study. We are required to have at least three books. I bought all 20! This includes the college text. Great effort and care goes into every book, that is observed and noticed by the student. Reading between the lines is offered for that advanced student body. Artwork is half the book! Re-reads, later in the year, allow you to take his work, still again, to a new level. This one is very different in that it shows the author's journey through life as an artist and author. How and where he got his ideas, fighting for validation or recognition with a parent as an artist, a swan song if you will of a great National Treasure.
