If the primary reason you are considering purchasing the Echo Flex is to Listen To Music, I would recommend passing on this unit and purchasing an Echo Dot or Echo 2nd or 3rd Gen Smart Speaker instead. The speaker on the Echo Flex is pretty mediocre but good enough for Alexa to confirm my home automation demands or get quick updates on the weather or news.
A bit about my home: Currently have 4 Echo Dots, 2 Echo Shows and 1 Echo 2nd Gen in various rooms in my home. I have smart light switches, thermostats, door locks, 2 Yamaha AVR receivers, 8 In ceiling speakers and an Ion Smart Security system ... all which can be voice controlled by Alexa.
In the two rooms that have built in speakers and the Yamaha AVR receivers I don't need an Echo device with speakers but rather just an Echo device that will pick up my voice commands and trigger my various home automation devices. Echo dots will work but they are more expensive and take up counter space.
The Echo Flex is perfect solution. The built in microphones on the Flex give me connectivity to Alexa and the compact size is inconspicuous and doesn't take up any counter space or clutter on furniture.
What I like most about the Echo Flex is the compact size and convenience. Echo's and Echo Dots have to sit on a counter or table top while the Echo Flex just plugs into an electrical outlet and hangs from the electrical plug out of the way. No power cords or power adapters to get in the way. Super easy to install and super clean look.
But Wait theres More: Add an Echo Smart Night Light or Motion Sensor and the power of the Echo Flex really shines. When you add the Smart Night Light module the Flex becomes an uber smart night light. Great for the bathroom, hallway, kids room, kitchen or garage. You name it, the Echo Flex night light just fits!. (read my review of the night light on that product listing). Another fantastic option for the Echo Flex is the motion sensor. When you add the motion sensor to the Flex you can trigger other Alexa connected devices to turn on or off based on motion. Both the motion sensor and the smart night light are super easy to install and really highlight the benefits of the Echo Flex.
Bonus feature: Built in USB Charger. If you don't add the smart night light or motion sensor you can use the built in USB port to charge your phone or power a portable USB device.
While there is a lot to like about the Echo Flex this Smart Speaker is definitely NOT optimized for music.
The tiny speaker inside the Flex does a pretty good job with voice but lacks the dynamic range and volume for music. If you do want to play music through the Flex the best way is to pair a bluetooth speaker to it.
Overall I'm very impressed with the Echo Flex. It best suited as a voice command trigger microphone and speaker for Home Automation devices. It's small, compact and frees up counter and table space from clutter. It easy to install and hangs neatly from the power plug out of the way. It has all the features of other Echo speakers including bluetooth pair. To get the most of out of the Echo Flex I highly recommend adding the Smart Night Light or Motion Sensor.
Amazon has another winner with this new speaker.
