When Elisapee’s father brings home a baby seagull, Elisapee falls in love with the bird right away. She feeds and cares for her new friend, named Nau, and even helps Nau learn how to fly!
Nau grows, and grows, and grows some more, until she’s big enough to fly all over town and play with the other seagulls. Soon, it seems like Nau is ready to leave home for good, and Elisapee has to learn how to say goodbye.
Based on the author’s childhood experience, this charming story about learning to care for animals will delight young readers.

For the first while Nau stays close and lives in a cardboard box inside the house. Elispaee and her brother feed the baby seagull sculpins, seal fat, whale blubber and even small krill. It seems that the little one is always hungry.
Nau outgrows her temperary box home and then lives on top of the family's shed. Elisapee proudly introduces her new pet to her friends in the community, watches her swim in the ponds nearby and even manages to teach her to fly which was no easy task. Each day is a new opportunity for playful adventures together, copious hugs and of course, the touching of hearts.
Nau is growing up fast and Elisapee finally realizes it is time for her to release Nau back into the wild once more and to say farewell to her beloved friend.
This story is based on the author's own childhood experience. The book teaches children the value and rewards of caring for animals. Adopting and nurturing a pet is a very positive, life changing experience for all involved.
The illustrations are truly phenomenal. They are vibrant, big, and so expressive. I fell in love with Elisapee when I first saw her on the cover. They enrich the text and make the story seem almost animated. The book can also be used as a catalyst to spark conversations and understanding of the culture and customs of people living in the far-north Arctic regions. I highly recommend this book.

I bought this book because years ago I helped my grandfather to raise 2 baby gulls who had been abandoned by their parents. I was very excited to receive this and relive that memory!
The thing is it shows the baby gull going from little and fuzzy one day and then growing into a full, white gull practically overnight. The truth is, gulls take 2-3 full years before turning white. Until then they are brown, usually with some white spots. They also don’t learn to fly by being thrown in the air by a human. They learn by hopping and flapping around on their own. First flight can take around 6 weeks but longer if the parents aren’t around to assist.
Not trying to be picky but I feel it’s important to teach our kids the correct info about our animal friends! I think the book could have been just as sweet while being more accurate.
