14-year-old Troy is being chased by a wildfire—with his kid sister, his dog, and his cat in tow. Can Troy get them all to safety?
The parent-approved survival series that celebrates the awesome history of us.
"Readers will blaze through the pages at Troy's side!"
Short attention spans | Chapter Book | Ages 8-12 | B&W Illustrations
14-year-old Troy is thrilled to be left in charge when his parents go away overnight. But when he wakes to see a monstrous wildfire racing toward his home, he’s in complete shock. Paradise, California is on fire! Worse, cell reception is down and he can't call his mom and dad to find out what to do. With a kid sister, a dog, and a cat to protect, he knows he has to act. How can he get them all to safety? Troy is no super-hero. He’s a kid who loves pizza, movies, and hanging out with his friends. He’s way out of his element. It's clear they'll never outrun the fire on foot. He starts brainstorming an escape plan. There's only one option open. Will it work? Can this brave boy save the day?
This is the 2nd I Escaped adventure in the children's series about brave boys and girls who face real-world challenges and find ways to escape disaster. Follow these inspiring kids while they brainstorm, help others, and hone their problem-solving skills.
The short chapters make for easy wins, and Troy's gripping situation keeps even reluctant readers turning pages just to find out what's going to happen next.
Based on eyewitness accounts and extensive research, this inspirational story is exceptionally vivid, swift-paced and stirring. The November 2018 Butte County disaster was California's biggest forest fire and has become a defining moment in American disaster history.
Includes a fact section at the back with wildfire information, fire safety tips, and much more. Great for kids book clubs and classrooms! A study guide is available at https://scottpetersbooks.com/downloads/worksheets

"As a former middle school teacher, I read with an eye towards what my students would have experienced while reading this book. I liked the historical fiction aspect of the plot and found the characters relatable and sympathetic. Both boys and girls would stay engaged in this book, and it is suitable for either silent reading or a whole class activity. Students love putting themselves in the shoes of such a hero. Great read, I highly recommend this book!"

About the authors
I live in Northern California with my spouse, two dogs, five chickens, one goose, about twenty-five fish and all sorts of wild critters and birds that live in the Redwoods and down in the creek behind my house.
When I'm not writing, I collect rocks, sell rocks, ride my bike, hang with friends, and travel. AND I just love to sit, relax, and read a real good mystery.
Hi! I write adventures for middle-graders who love to explore the world. I've also created over 300 museum, science center & theme park installations for the Smithsonian, Walt Disney World, Paramount Pictures & more.

14-year-old Troy and his sister Emma are home alone for the night when the devastating fire begins. In the morning, it's still dark as night, the air filled with smoke. Troy, his sister, and the people and animals of the small California town of Paradise must flee quickly to survive.
With short chapters that end on intriguing cliffhangers, kids will enjoy following Troy on his adventure to save himself, his sister and pets from the oncoming fire. Parents and caregivers will enjoy the fact that this is a story based on a true-life event, and at the end of the story there is information about it. There is also a common-core guide available for educators, making this a school friendly pick. Kids will love the book, though, for its danger, adventure - and brave young protagonist.

This book is full of realistic action between the older brother and younger sister. He takes his promise to his parents to protect his sister even when she becomes annoying. This is fast paced, on the seat of your chair action from the very beginning. For those who are fans of the “I Survived “ series by Lauren Tarshis, I guarantee that you will enjoy this series. I highly recommend this to all adventure readers.

Troy, who is fourteen, and his younger sister Emma are left home alone for a night by their parents. After a late night junk food and movie splurge, Troy and Emma wake up to find that the electricity's out, the sky is black with smoke, and everyone's left town. What would you do?
