I found from the first page the story pulled the reader in. It was a very fast moving, come to life book. I thoroughly enjoy books like this. For me it taught endurance that no matter what even if a situation looks grim to keep going because you never know what is on the other side. Don't give up.

Like the wildly popular 'I Survived' series that fly from the elementary and middle school library shelves, this 'I Escaped' story is one young readers won't want to miss.

14-year-old Troy and his sister Emma are home alone for the night when the devastating fire begins. In the morning, it's still dark as night, the air filled with smoke. Troy, his sister, and the people and animals of the small California town of Paradise must flee quickly to survive.

With short chapters that end on intriguing cliffhangers, kids will enjoy following Troy on his adventure to save himself, his sister and pets from the oncoming fire. Parents and caregivers will enjoy the fact that this is a story based on a true-life event, and at the end of the story there is information about it. There is also a common-core guide available for educators, making this a school friendly pick. Kids will love the book, though, for its danger, adventure - and brave young protagonist.

For a small book this packs a powerful punch. Fourteen year old Troy is left in charge of his younger sister while his parents are away for twenty-four hours. Troy wakes to his cell phone ringing, his dog tugging on his sleeve and pitch blackness. Unable to reach their parents Troy goes next door to the neighbor for advice. Mrs. Jones makes it clear they should stay put. When Troy sees houses on their street erupt in flames he decides they have to leave. Unfortunately he can’t convince Mrs. Jones. Troy loads up his sister and their two pets in their dad’s Bronco and heads for what he hopes is safety.

This book is full of realistic action between the older brother and younger sister. He takes his promise to his parents to protect his sister even when she becomes annoying. This is fast paced, on the seat of your chair action from the very beginning. For those who are fans of the “I Survived “ series by Lauren Tarshis, I guarantee that you will enjoy this series. I highly recommend this to all adventure readers.

Paradise is where my parents retired and are buried. The house they lived in burned down in the fire after 34 years of wonderful memories with my husband and our 3 children. We are just so grateful that my parents died before the fire, my dad being the last in 2016 at over 100 years old. Our youngest son has autism and trouble reading so this was the perfect book to have him read to me. It’s just at his reading level and was a very exciting story. We appreciate all of the facts about the fire the author put in the last pages of this book, too.

This book was a quick read. We have family friends who lived through and were evacuated from the area of the Camp Fire. I think both adults and kids can relate to what it would feel like to be a teenager in life threatening circumstances the main character has to make in this book for himself, his little sister and pets. I would not recommend this book for readers younger than 10 even if they could read the text. If you have a younger child, parents should read it first and then decide.

What I liked about this book is that it can be read with the real California fire in mind, or purely as a story. And that it is both a good story and a well written one. And the quip about organic-this and hummus-that (I feel you).

Troy, who is fourteen, and his younger sister Emma are left home alone for a night by their parents. After a late night junk food and movie splurge, Troy and Emma wake up to find that the electricity's out, the sky is black with smoke, and everyone's left town. What would you do?
