Product description

Review

"Given its reliance on the CPA Code of Ethics, its readability, and its thoroughness, the book is an excellent textbook or reference book for senior undergraduates and entry-level graduate students, as well as for practitioners wishing to renew their acquaintance with the range of ethical questions they encounter in their practice.... In the Preface the authors outline their goals for the book, which briefly stated include increasing ethical and legal knowledge, raising awareness of ethical issues in practice, promoting ethical decision-making skills and the ability to solve ethical dilemmas, and fostering the development of a professional ethical identity. These goals have been met and exceeded in this book. The authors provide knowledge of ethical concerns to practicing psychologists, researchers, and academics in a well-written book that is very readable and interesting." , Canadian Psychology, 2014, Vol. 55, No. 1 [Full review at DOI: 10.1037/a0035674] -- David R. Evans ― Canadian Psychology

From the Back Cover

Ethics for the Practice of Psychology in Canada covers what is expected of Canadian psychologists from the unique perspective of how to be ethical. In this new edition of the essential Ethics for the Practice of Psychology in Canada, content is both revised and expanded. This authoritative resource continues to fill a vital need for a Canadian textbook, while incorporating the Canadian Code of Ethics for Psychologists. The authors address the key ethical issues and all of the competencies required for registration in every Canadian jurisdiction, including making ethical decisions, identifying and resolving ethical dilemmas, meeting professional standards, appreciating legal expectations, maintaining professional boundaries, and conducting research. Each chapter presents case studies for practicing ethical decision-making, while reflective journal activities provide an opportunity for awareness of personal motives and biases relevant to making ethical choices. Written primarily for students in professional psychology graduate programs, this book is also ideal for anyone preparing to practice in Canada or for experienced psychologists seeking to maintain or enhance their ethical knowledge, skills, and integrity.

Since obtaining registration as a psychologist in 1987 and earning my doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Windsor in 1989, I have practiced in psychiatric hospitals, community clinics, group homes, rehabilitation centers, and in private practice. I have also been a professor of counselling psychology at the University of Alberta since 1997. When I began my training in psychotherapy, I thought that good therapy involved dispensing wisdom. Given that I was rather young, I assumed that I had time to fill waiting to become older and thus wiser. So I decided to learn everything I could about ethics in order to stay out of trouble and in the profession while I gained the experience I needed. An ardent believer in "writing to learn," I authored two books on ethics with my dear friend Ken Crook: Ethics for the Practice of Psychology in Canada (2004), and Ethics and Law for Teachers (2007). I also continued to study, teach, practice, and write about psychotherapy, culminating in Becoming an Effective Psychotherapist: Adopting a Theory That's Right For You and Your Client (2009). To my great relief--having discovered first hand that wisdom does not inevitably accrue with age--I learned that effective therapy is not about giving advice. I also learned that being ethical is not about receiving advice. I have come to appreciate that they share a common wisdom and congruent aims. Now I see my interests in ethics and psychotherapy as synergistic; that an effective therapist is also an ethical one and vice-versa. I can't imagine a better career than psychotherapy; it is always interesting, often satisfying, and ultimately deeply rewarding. I take pride in aspiring to be a good therapist and in striving to inspire others to do likewise.
