“Crazy. Funny. Lyrical. Perfectly wildly beautiful. You won't be able to stop yourself from singing this aloud. A real gem of picture book joy.” —Jon Scieszka, First Ambassador for Children’s Literature and bestselling author of The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales |
“This frantic and curious book kept me up all night—but I suppose that was the idea.” —Lemony Snicket, New York Times bestselling author of A Series of Unfortunate Events |
“This book is a contemporary read-aloud classic. It's my new go-to for just about any situation, a picture book that works as well at bedtime as it does in front of a rowdy classroom. I'm mad I didn't write it.” —Mac Barnett, New York Times bestseller and two-time winner of the E.B. White Read Aloud Award |

Dad had done the dishes. Mom had locked the doors. I was snuggled up in bed listening for the snores...

The dog's into the eggnog. Mom's tap dancing to Prince...

while dad is on the laptop buying ten-yard bolts of chintz.

I cannot think what happened to make us act this way. We all were feeling drowsy at the dimming of the day.

Review

"Pictures are packed with details, including clever allusions to other picture books and chapter books for young readers. . . . [A] crowd-pleasing underwear joke [is] sure to crack up anyone. . . . Recommended for youngsters (and their grownups) who come from or enjoy observing a family with more quirks than every cast member of a Wes Anderson movie combined."Â -School Library Journal
"[A] comic romp. . . . Manic though it may be, the family's live-and-let-live attitude toward its members' rule-breaking peculiarities makes this rip-roaring romp by Meloy defiantly wholesome."—Publisher's Weekly
"An energetic, insomniac romp of an anti-bedtime book. [A] rollicking read-aloud. Don't sleep on this one."—Kirkus Reviews
"Meloy's musical text, always bouncing forward in Seussian rhythms, builds along with the action. It's an exercise in energetic absurdity, a busier, edgier, and more grounded take on Eric Carle's The Nonsense Show, with Harris' primary spot-colored illustrations capturing the intensity and charm. An enticing bedtime alternative."—Booklist
"[D]azzling. . . each new picture [is] more chaotic and eye-popping than the one before. . . . In every [spread], there's at least one frog to seek and find, a rare touch of calm amid the insomniac rowdiness of this rhyming tale for children ages 5-8"-The Wall Street Journal
"[A]n updated riff on the 1980s favorite 'The Napping House.'. . . The exuberant nighttime household chaos, well conveyed in Harris's witty, sloppy style with thick strokes of saturated blues and blazing orange, will make many a sleep-deprived parent laugh between shouts of 'Settle down!'"-The New York Times
"[With] rollicking rhymes . . . [and] exuberant page-filling illustrations (think Tomi Ungerer) . . . Meloy and Harris depict one family's anarchical bedtime routine within their lighthouse-esque domicile."-Horn Book Magazine

About the authors
Colin Meloy is the charismatic lead singer and songwriter of The Decemberists, a highly celebrated (and uncommonly literary) band that has sold in excess of 1 million records. Colin has been recognized as much for his musical abilities—his ear for inventive and timeless melodies and his lilting vocals—as he has been for his unmatched lyrical prowess. Crafting each song as a vivid, imaginative story unto itself, he’s become one of the most distinctive and appreciated voices of our time. WILDWOOD marks Colin’s debut as children’s author. Follow Colin on Twitter, @colinmeloy.
Shawn Harris’s first illustrated book Her Right Foot by Dave Eggers received seven starred reviews, was an Orbis Pictus Award Honor Book, an ALA Notable, and a PW Best Book of the Year. His other picture books include Eggers's What Can a Citizen Do (a Time Magazine Best Children’s Book), Everyone’s Awake by Colin Meloy, and A Polar Bear in the Snow by Mac Barnett, which received four starred reviews. His authorial debut, Have You Ever Seen a Flower? is being published by Chronicle Books in May, 2021.
Shawn got his start as an illustrator in the early 2000's creating album art for bands, including his own, The Matches. He lives in Northern California and enjoys surfing.

I liked that one other reader of this book saw those references as opportunities to start conversations with kids, get them to expand their knowledge of things beyond their age level...but, I think there are just too many references in the book for it be continuially interesting to small kids? Maybe? I can totally see a kid asking every other page "what does that mean?" Or "who is that?" And feeling a bit left out of the reading the story WITH you. It's nice to explain things and engage, but if you have to explain every other reference it's more of a lecture down to kids than it is story time, eh? I would say this is a fun picture/art story book for adults that kids can partake in, not the other way around. I still like it, but it does make me question who this is really written for. It's totally possible to write kids books that parents will want to re-read at story time that doesn't exclude children from some of the writing.
