Evolution: How We and All Living Things Came to Be Hardcover – Illustrated, Feb. 1 2010

Purchase options and add-ons
Evolution is the process that created the terrible teeth of Tyrannosaurus rex and the complex human brain, clever enough to understand the workings of nature. Young readers will learn how a British naturalist named Charles Darwin studied nature and developed his now-famous concepts of natural selection and survival of the fittest. And how modern-day science has added to our understanding of the theory of evolution. Can something as complex and wondrous as the natural world be explained by a simple theory? The answer is yes, and now Evolution explains how in a way that makes it easy to understand.

Great explanation of evolution theory

Bought this for my grade 6 classroom when I had students asking me about evolution. They read it during silent reading time and are really enjoying it! The language is fairly easy to understand. My average-high readers seem to understand well, but this would not be suitable for those at a lower reading level.

The illustration of the inner part is a little bit scary for a 7 year old kid. I will keep the book and maybe wait for one more year to read with my son.

This book has wonderful illustrations, accurate information, and for those with particular conflicts between science and religion, this book does not challenge this concern.

This book is a must read for young people. I let my friend and his little fellow spend time with my copy and it quickly became the little rascal's favorite book! The illustrations are super duper and the storyline is thrilling, with many unexpected turns and spine chilling action sequences. By the time the denouement rolls around, the reader finally gets a breath, realizing that they've just been through an absolute roller coaster of literary and visual exposition. The author is precise; clinically so, in the execution of this fine piece.

As a writer, I'm always feel a bit jealous about how powerfully great illustration communicates. Words just can't do that! The writing in Evolution is solid, but it's the artwork that works. I was delighted by the images in this book as an adult; as a kid, I would have been blown away ... and I would have gotten a lot of solid information about biology and evolution along the way. The tone is firmly in the "nature is neat" category, enthusiastically and matter-of-factly communicating essential and interesting biology, no preaching, no lecturing. And with really interesting dino paintings from cover to cover!
We all have books that we remember from childhood, and this will surely be a book for the current crop of small humans to remember.

An important addition to children's literature which is sadly lacking in evolutionary information. "Evolution: How We and All Living Things Came to Be" explains the natural world in a way that is easy to understand.

Great illustrations and writing that is well suited for the target age group make this a great introductory book for kids. Either for reading aloud or for more advanced readers to enjoy on their own.

A Fine Little Primer for Pre-teen Children

I bought this for my eleven year old grandson who mentioned that some fellow students, children of biblical literalist parents, had been pushing the idea the earth is 5,000 years old. I told him they were misinformed, talked to him about carbon dating and the overwhelming proof supporting evolution and then ordered this book for him. I looked it over and determined it to be written intelligently and at his level. He read it and gets it. Education is the best defense against ignorance.

Love this book for kids
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 20, 2017Verified Purchase
I love this book for children as it explains evolution very well and gives examples easy enough for them to grasp. It is not for kids younger than 7 for sure, maybe even older depending on how your child is in understanding this type of stuff. I do have to explain a lot of the things in the book to my child as we read it together as she is not able to understand all the things herself at 7.5. The book goes into DNA and other things to help explain evolution so it is not just evolution per se, it really teaches the entire process of natural selection, etc. It is not too in depth, so it might be more appropriate for younger kids 7-10 than over 11.
