- Customer Reviews:
Anthony (Hopkins) is 80, mischievous, living defiantly alone and rejecting the carers that his daughter, Anne (Colman), encouragingly introduces. Yet help is also becoming a necessity for Anne; she can't make daily visits anymore and Anthony's grip on reality is unravelling. As we experience the ebb and flow of his memory, how much of his own identity and past can Anthony cling to? How does Anne cope as she grieves the loss of her father, while he still lives and breathes before her?

Anthony Hopkins portrayed this role to perfection and you found yourself both laughing and crying along with him. No wonder he won Best Actor Award at this years Oscars.
But what sets "The Father" apart is that, unlike those three other films, in which one merely observes the sufferer, here one shares his experience, as it were from the inside out, even though one continues to be an observer at the same time. This is not apparent at first, but becomes so as the film progresses; and it is a shattering experience. One of the best and most disturbing films I've seen in some time. Olivia Colman is great, as always, and it's possibly Hopkins' best performance to date.
