When a mission ends in disaster—there is no way to achieve the objective, no way to regroup and try again, no plan B, no hope—all you can do is fall back into FAILURE MODE and try to salvage whatever you can.
...if it is even possible to save anything, or anyone.
The galaxy is doomed. Monkeys may be clever and too stubborn to give up, but Skippy The Idiot Who Got Played knows the harsh truth: this is a fight he can’t win. The odds are not only stacked against him, he was designed not to win this fight.
Maybe he can salvage some faint memory of the civilizations that inhabit the galaxy, but those beings are doomed. Doomed. Including the Merry Band of Pirates.

I was worried about how Alanson would end the series however he managed to make the story believable and one I enjoyed. A great series I highly recommend for sci-fi fans

What a great end to a great series. Going to miss reading about Joe, Skippy and the rest of the Pirates. If you are looking for a good story that will have you laughing out loud, this is it.

Surely not the end?

This is allegedly the final book of the best series I've ever had the fortune to read... This particular installment starts off a bit slow, as some have mentioned, and in a way feels a bit unnecessarily rushed at the climax, but I flew through it in 3 days over Christmas. I've noticed a few reviews saying the final chapters were a clear ending to the story, I don't agree, and quite frankly would be astonished and gutted if there really are no more to come, I certainly hope there are...
*MILD STORYLINE SPOILERS*
The series so far has putted Bishop and his crew against increasingly advanced species, culminating in the "final" battle against the elders in this one. However, there still seems obvious scope for further installments featuring the outsiders to the galaxy who we were taught more about in this latest book. In addition, there were several mentions about what the events of this book would mean for the astro-politics of the galaxy following the changes this climax caueed. Not to mention the ongoing war which it is hinted could kick off given what has happened.
So unkess I had some chapters missing off the end of my kindle edition of the book, I can see the potential for this story to continue for a while yet. I hope the author agrees, he's created something special and not one person who's read this series would be unhappy for it to continue I'm sure. If however, this is the end, thank you Mr Alanson, for the laughter and the joy.

A fond farewell to Joe, Skippy and the Merry band of pirates

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series. At times during this instalment I felt there was a good degree of padding which did not serve to move the plot along at the pace I would like; but then the final lines hit me, I knew the ride was over and I felt a little sad to think that there is no ‘next book’ to look forward to.
If you have not read the earlier novels, then start with Columbus Day and enjoy the ride 😁. For fans, it’s full of the stuff you have come to know and love.
Thank you Craig Alanson.

This story has always been about Joe and Skippy supported by a fabulous caste of characters. The gambling beetles, those murderous kitties, lizards etc. have been comedy gold throughout. The action is quite often a sidenote to Joe and Skippy’s bickering and each element always had the right balance to it.
Thank you to the author for having the audacity to write something as daft as this – I loved it

My only issue is that as far as I know this is the last. Really would appreciate some more, as skippy is going to be around for ever how about some more books set 100yrs in the future and working with Joe's family?

A great series that has managed to stay interesting for a considerable run, and this episode is no different. More poignant in some places, downright sad in others, but still funny. Great fun to read. A well crafted story.
