Bought the first one. So satisfied with the first one that I came back twice to buy another.
We now have three bases. On top on the bases we have a 5gal, a 7gal and another 7gal plastic poultry waterer. The kind you see that are with a red base, white jug and black screw on top.
Below the bases we have large galvanized feed bowls that we have flipped over. We placed the base on top of those, to add height. This reduces the amount of poop and straw that inevitably gets into the waterers.
The bases have managed to keep the water from freezing. When the outside temp was -17 degrees F., one of the bases could not keep the entire waterer from freezing. It did not freeze entirely, however. The flock always had water.
We run one long extension cord to the coop. The end of the cord has three prongs. We have three bases and three waterers. We have around 25 in our flock. We hope to be able to go away for a week without having our helper have to carry buckets of water to the coop, since the pump is frozen.
The base does not get very hot, at all. When I am cleaning my waterers, the hens will stand on top of the warm base. I hope this review helps.
Also, they say "do not use with an extension cord"... but I HAVE for all of those 5 years with no problem. Who has power to their chicken coop? Unless you are a big time farmer, you probably don't. So the trick is to use a hardy, outdoor extension cord and tie it up off the ground, so it is never sitting in water. If you live in a wet location, you could seal up the plug location with plastic bags or something.
Also, this is located OUTSIDE my coop, which also is against advice. But I've placed it on a large, flat piece of flagstone. And I live in a dry climate (New Mexico) so it gets exposed to way more water just from the garden hose than the sky...
I had this on a functioning GFCI outlet, but it was not enough of a shock to trip the breaker. Would absolutely not recommend and would honestly appreciate a refund.
UPDATE: 100% recommend; thru all the bitter cold temps we have been experiencing on the East Coast in Jan 2018...water has not froze.
My heater is in the coop but outside. I have the heater sitting on a ceramic pot with my galvanized waterier sitting on the heater
