From the author of "Roadwork" and "Demolition" comes the charming story of a family and its car that get stuck in rising flood waters. Everyone who attempts to rescue the car fails: a jeep and a tow truck also become mired in the mud and a firetruck can't pass over a rock slide that blocks its path.
Albeit old and unobtrusive, Farmer John's "rusty yet trusty and orangey red" tractor proves reliable enough to save the stranded folks. The story thus emphasizes the virtues of modesty and dependability through fun, rhyming text. The watercolour illustrations, though muted and subtle, enhance the book's theme and accentuate the scene of steadily pouring rain.

A lovely story with beautiful illustrations

My nearly three year old loves it and wants it over and over again and I enjoy looking at it. He is into the subject of rescue (loves fire engines and fireman stories) so this is just the thing. The rhyming is great for this age group.

Candlewick Press poor version of a lovely story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 8, 2017Verified Purchase
I read an original version of this book to my little man, which we took from the library. Very cute and engaging for my little boy who is very into his tractors.
In the reprinted version I purchased by 'Candlewick Press' , some of the wording had changed from the original and I was not particularly happy with the images and layout. Would not recommend this version if you have ever read the original.

Well written book.

Purchased this book for my grandson to go along with a toy tractor I sent him. My daughter says he loves the book, likes to look at the pictures and runs over to get his tractor whenever she is reading the book to him. While he is too young to fully comprehend (2 yrs. old) my daughter said he stays interested. She thinks the book is well written and is very happy to add it to his expanding library.
