I have no words to describe this book. I could not put it down. Connie Suttle you are my hero and I would name my firstborn after you if I was pregnant. (Which, unfortunately I'm not.)
This book is the light in the blinding darkness. The rock in a sea of badly written fiction. I LOVED every second of this book.
Grammar and structure are flawless. Character development is dynamic and full of life. Written in such beautiful (and correct) english I almost wept for joy.
Thank you for bringing such a new and original story into the world. I feel like if I ever read the word "vampire" again I'll gouge out my eyeballs. I have no words. You are a goddess.
A goddess of impeccable grammar. You're my hero Connie Suttle.
5 trillion gold stars!! I can't wait for the next one (when's the release date for it exactly?)

A dead god.
A dying world.
A girl never meant to be sentient.
Siriaa is dying. A poison is spreading throughout the planet and none know how to neutralize it. Finder, working in King Tamblin's castle kitchen most of her life, has never spoken. A child of questionable parentage, Finder is an orphan assigned to perform duties nobody else wants.
While others plan intrigue, murder and invasion to escape the poison's effects, Finder watches all in mute acceptance. Will she be the key to Siriaa's salvation, or will it die about her, without knowing why?

This book has ideas new to me, an avid reader for 50 plus years. Realky liked the juxtaposition of famtasy with our own technology.

All this build up an the book ends just as the action begins? Im not saying it's a bad book, it held my attention through out but seriously? I have to wait another few months to figure out what all the build up in this book was about? And sooooo many different characters to keep track of!!! Damn

j'ai tellement aimé que je me suis abonné à kindle unlimited. J'ai alors lu toutes la série en très peu de temps exception faite du dernier tome que j'ai trouvé plus long et beaucoup moins intéressant.

This book was interesting and pulled me in, but in the end it didn't answer any of the questions it creates. It doesn't look like the next book is going to answer them either. It has very simply left me very frustrated. The characters and story line are interesting but the writing style is choppy and not very well thought out. It could be a great book with a little more work. Sadly, I think I'll do my best to forget about this series.

Author is a little jumpy and could use a professional editor sometimes but the story is excellent and the telling is gripping. A very promising series start that I am looking forward to continuing.

A story that is both intriguing and takes amazing turns
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on August 30, 2016Verified Purchase
I didn't know what to expect from this book, other than that it was about a girl who would be important in a dying land. A fantasy book, which would take me away for a while.
Finder is a girl working in the kitchens, she is mute and as a result is mostly ignored, as long as she gets her work done. And her work usually involves the grotty jobs that no-one else wants to do.
Finder comes to the notice of those above her and get's her name as a result, when she starts finding things. It comes out in the open when Lord Yeovil 'loses' his purse and Irdith pushes her forward as someone who can find it for him. Finder senses that no good will come of this but does as commanded (she has no choice), the resultant death of the thief Erdin was horrible to witness despite her premonition!
Then Prince Amlis hears of her and things change completely for Finder. Life continues down a different route for her and she ends up getting into all sorts of adventures.
The story is intriguing and takes amazing turns. It certainly warrants reading and I think the rest of the series will as well. It is well written and engaging.

Intriguing tale though slow to get started.

Overall a great read and I will be getting the next in the series. If you like fantasy novels with kingdoms, flying beings and of course tyrannical rulers then read it. I loved the mix of old and new in the different countries/continents. This book definitely has more to give the further you read.
The cover intrigued me from the get go and after reading the sample something made me want to read the full story, though it wasn't until further in that I started to get excited about this book. I'd say the beginning seems like it's not really going anywhere until the tale moves to the third location, then it starts to get very interesting, everything before giving a clearer picture of what's going on. (So I recommend sticking with it). I found the plot and theme completely compelling and full of original ideas and though at times it's hard to keep up with the characters, (there are so many), there is a great combination of good guys and bad. I really got to liking the heroine as well, seeing her beaten and miss used so much you really want her to triumph. All the main characters are well placed.
The only drawback to the book for me is that it takes too long to get going, and in the beginning you don't get drawn into the action very much or care about the characters and even at the end there were characters I wanted to know more about or care about to a greater extent but not enough had been written about them, their reactions/feelings weren't clear and so I was left wanting so much more. This might be due to the view points we get, the author writes in the first person viewpoint of the main character only, with the rest written in the third person view, giving an overall narrative that leaves the reader a little separated from the story, or emotion. That's just me, anyway. I'd liked to have read the whole thing from a few specific characters viewpoints instead. I think it would have been much more enthralling.
Sometimes authors can put too much information into their story so the readers own imagination is left with no room to play, and sometimes not quite enough is included. I felt that the latter was true in this case as times, though it did not leave the story bereft, just with me wanting parts fleshed out more and characters made more vivid and alive. Especially Amlis and Justis. You don't always feel like the action and adventure are pulling you in enough, but there is so much going on on so many levels it doesn't fail to keep you guessing and entertaining. It just feels like maybe one more draft would have got it perfect.

Enough with the beaten heroine already
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on June 11, 2017Verified Purchase
I started this book with high hopes based on the synopsis and other reviews. The beginning was ok - so the poor heroine gets beaten and smears ash on her beautiful face... but that's like Cinderella right? Plus she has some superpowers so things are bound to pick up. Right? Ah no. I'm now on 81% of the book and our heroine has been beaten by just about everyone she's met and generally treated like crud for almost all of it. The women in the book in particular seem to take vicious offence to her (yay girl power). I'm just bored of finder/Quinn getting beat on to be honest. Who wants to read that for 81% of the book? It's not cool and it's not clever.
To add to the above... I found the characters 1d... the storyline began to shift around between different individuals so much (sometimes after a single paragraph.... seriously) it made my head spin... and really even with less than 20% of the book left I just had to tap out.
Big fat thumbs down from me on this one

Loved this very different and original book.

This is the first book I have read by Connie and I will definitely be reading more. I was drawn into this story right from the start after discarding several books recently purchased which turned out to leave me bored after the first few chapters. Wow! I thought when I began this one. It is an intriguing plot and Finder/Quin the main female protagonist is a continuing mystery which kept me reading on right through the book. I do have to admit I felt more than a little frustrated when I reached the end only to discover there were still many puzzles unanswered including the mystery of Quin. The book is fairly short and ends extremely abruptly. As is the case so often these days I have had to buy the second book in the series to continue this most original and absorbing story. I simply need to know more. I highly recommend this book to all lovers of fantasy.

I loved the start of this. not so much the middle and the end.

The story seemed to start so interestingly. So many possibilities.
But it seemed to degenerate into a series of short scenes, mainly snapshots. A bit of dialogue, a snippet of action, then cut to the next scene.
Very unsatisfactory.
The characters were rather narrow too.
Apart from the lead, everyone just had one character trait, which they showed in a repeat loop.
I would have loved to have more detail, more varied multi dimensional characters, and a wider view into the 3 cultures. And I would also have loved the lead character to stop being such a passive, biddable victim. With the powers she had, and the network of supporters she had available, her passivity was very frustrating.
