Don't believe in love at first sight? He'll make you believe.... Come back to Vermont and to this USA Today best-selling series!
Skye Copeland is on paid leave from her broadcasting job after accidentally drawing a pecker on the traffic map. Let that sink in. Like it's her fault the traffic pattern that day created a perfect schlong?
Skye isn't laughing. She needs this job. And that's the only reason she's agreed to chase down a story in her least favorite place - that hell on earth known as Vermont. A quick trip. In and out. Much like - never mind.
Skye can sneak into the town that once tried to break her, get the story and get back into the good graces of her producer. Easy peasy. Except things go sideways even as she sets foot over the county line.
Her step-sister is on the run from a violent drug dealer. And the cop on the case is none other than Benito Rossi, the man who broke her teenage heart. His dark brown eyes still tear her apart. And even as she steels herself to finally tell him off after 12 years, the old fireworks are still there.
Things are about to go boom.

I got a little annoyed on how the past was revisited in the script jumping for those into 3rd person for those chapters because the author kept referring to Skye as “our girl” and it would rehash info that we already knew in the text.
Where I struggled was with the romance itself. It turned sexual extremely fast, and I had a hard time believing that Skye, who doesn't like sex, would be so quick to jump into it. And while I liked Benito, his terms of endearment (used very frequently) started grating really fast.
I also struggled with some of Skye's characterizations. There's a point in the flashback scenes where she's described as sweet, but there wasn't anything in those scenes that led me to believe she was sweet.
This story is told in alternating styles and I had a hard time getting used to it. The scenes in the present are told in first POV present tense. But the flashback scenes were told from an omniscient POV, also present tense. It was a little jarring to go from one to the other, so I think I appreciated the last third book the most because there were little flashback scenes and less back and forth.
My review makes it sound like I didn't enjoy the book, but that isn't the case. I always enjoy Sarina Bowen's style of writing, and the plot was engaging enough that I could see past the above issues while reading. This is a good addition to the True North series, and even though it's not my favourite, I did like it better than the previous book, but not as much as Steadfast, which, frankly, was stellar. All in all, 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

The two main characters are Skye Copeland and Benito Rossi who were close friends for a year. She was sixteen and lived in a run-down trailer park. He was eighteen and her safe place. Yet, when unexpected circumstances brings them together again after a separating span of twelve years they realise that time and distance has not diminished their secret love and feelings for each other. But what caused the separation?
In the present, Sky is on a force vacation from her TV presenting job but has been lure back to Vermont, considered 'her hell on earth' on the promise of a big investigative story by her step-sister. And she finds out Benito is a state cop hunting drug traffickers. How does he react when he sees her? And what changes to bring them together?
Well, I suggest you book and find out the answers for yourself. There are some surprises.

Not my favourite Sarina Bowen novel.
Skye Copeland is a TV weather presenter until an honest mistake puts her on forced holiday for two weeks. When her scatty step-sister claims she has a scoop and asks her to drive a rental car from New York to Vermont she reluctantly agrees to visit the small town she left 12 years ago. But when she arrives her step-sister gives her the slip and steals the rental car, saying she is mixed up with some dangerous men and Skye should talk to Benito Rossi.
Benito is the man she left town to forget and now she's forced into close proximity. Then Benito lets slip that her sister might be involved in a group smuggling drugs that he is investigating and he seems to want to start up again exactly where they left off as if nothing has happened.
Stepping back and looking at the reasons why I didn't enjoy this book as much as Sarina's other books, I have to say that I found Benito's attitude a bit odd. He hasn't seen or heard from Skye for 12 years and yet he is calling her "honey" right from the start. Also, we see more of Skye's POV so we feel as though Benito has behaved badly(view spoiler). It is only at the end that Benito turned it around for me.
My favourite refrain, I liked it but I didn't love it.

Skylar and Benito knew each other as teenagers. Ben was there for Sky during a really difficult year. A misunderstanding kept them apart.
I love that when when Skylar finds herself back in Vermont after 12 years and faced with Benito again she doesn’t automatically fall for his charms, on the outside anyway, and makes him work for her affections.
I loved the suspense element of this book. It felt like two story lines happening that of Skylar and Benito and the will they, won’t they and the case that Benito was working on as a cop. We got answers to some questions raised in previous True North books by the end of this one.
I’m excited for more in the future. More True North. More Sarina Bowen. Whatever I can get my hands on really.

Benito is part of the Rossi family who we have met in previous books... He's a Detective after being in the army previously.
Skylar is now a journalist working on tv new with the weather/traffic department.
When these guys first met when they were both teenagers Benito was the best friend that Skylar could wish for.... loving protective and there for her every need supporting her while she had to endure living with her mum's latest partner who wasn't the nicest.. but after many misunderstandings Skylar leaves town without saying goodbye.
Jump 12 years and many life changes and something important bring Sklyar back to Vermont where she has to 're build her friendship with Benito again.
Will their second chance work out for them?
All I can say is Skylar eventually gets the fireworks she's been waiting all her life for!!
Fab writing and another hit read by Sarina!

The True North series is wonderful, each story as individual as the last, yet with the common thread of Vermont, friends & acquaintances to truly illustrate the closeness of people living, loving & growing together.
I'm not one for reiterating the entire story verbatim in a review, suffice to say that alongside Wesmie & The Brooklyn Bruisers, this Truely excellent series is up there in my Top Favourites ! Thank you Sarina !!
Exceptional and Highly Recommended !! xx
