A bighearted novel about motherhood, friendship, moving on, and love of all kinds.
Ever since Beth Bailey was a girl, she’s been in love with her best friend’s older brother, Mark. She’s continued to hold out hope that maybe, someday, he’ll love her back. But now Beth is thirty-five years old, and on the day of Mark’s wedding to another woman, she finally accepts the wake-up call she needs to move on.
Beth’s dream of marrying her first love may be over, but her other biggest desire is still within reach: becoming a mother. Having lost her own parents very young, there’s nothing Beth wants more in life, and nothing she’ll stop at to make her wish come true.
Over the course of five years, and with unexpected twists along the way, Beth will come to startling realisations about family, friendship, the meaning of love, and most importantly, herself on the winding path to happiness and, she hopes, to motherhood.

Product description
From the Publisher
Set over the course of five winter seasons, this heartfelt novel follows Beth Bailey as one of her lifelong dreams ends and she vows to stop at nothing to make one of her other dreams come true. Kicking off at the wedding of the man she’d always hoped she’d marry, Beth decides she’s done waiting for what she wants to come to her. And so, she turns her focus to her other core desire—becoming a mother. When she meets a charming single father after the first door to love closes, it seems as if the universe may be cracking a window for something even bigger for Beth. But of course, no path in life is as straightforward as we hope, and Beth will face many other detours on her unexpected journey to happiness.
No matter your seasonal preference, Kitty Johnson’s Five Winters is sure to have you reaching for a cup of cocoa and your thickest scarf as you follow Beth through the frosty streets of England on an adventure that will both test and reward, all while demonstrating that whether or not you get there, no dream in life is too big to chase. So, fans of Josie Silver’s One Day in December and Emily Stone’s Always, in December, it’s time to bundle up, grab your tissues, and settle in for this wistful winter read—summer will just have to wait its turn.

Following this realization, Beth turns her attention to her other dream - becoming a mother. Having lost her own parents very young, there’s nothing Beth wants more in life, and she’ll stop at nothing to make her wish come true.
The book spans the five years following Mark’s wedding and chronicles Beth’s efforts to find love and begin building her family. Although classed as a romance, this book is so much more than that. It deals with issues of love, loss, family and independence. It is a beautiful book and, although it is not my standard genre, I really enjoyed it and read it in one sitting. Definitely worth a read (and it’s currently included on Kindle Unlimited).

I liked Beth, our heroine, a great deal, though I'm with Rosie and don't "do" kids so all the yearning for a baby sails over my head. Give me a puppy, though, and it would be a different story.....the family Groves were a lovely creation as well. They were all a delight, especially Richard.
I like the little Winter headings, which I only spotted on Winter 5 had snowflakes to match. A nice little touch.
However, one repeated error gave me conniptions !! She persistently writes roller coaster and not rollercoaster. It's one word. A lot of authors do this so she's far from alone but it's annoying nevertheless. She also went all American in writing draft and not draught, then the same with racking and not wracking. THEN she capitalises black which seems to be a new thing these days and not French !! That REALLY got my back up. She also wrote working and not work at one point and I didn't like Jaimie spelt this way as I kept reading it quickly as Janine and it kept throwing me ! Body popping and fuzzy headed needed hyphenating and it should be Conga'd, I would say, but could be wrong.
There are some funny lines in it and also I found myself decidedly snivelly a few times as well. I had no idea what a gong bath was so googled it and it's all a bit hocus-pocus for my liking !!
I'll definitely read another by her, though.

All the characters were so well written and interesting (even Jaimie and his naturist ways 🙃). It made for a compelling and addictive read. The plot and writing style were lovely and it had me devouring the whole book in no time at all.
The plot, characters and emotions they gave you all felt very raw and real, especially Beth’s struggles of knowing what she wants and not being able to/knowing how to get it. After reading the acknowledgements at the end, it’s easy to see why. Johnson has bravely used her own emotions and experiences in such a beautiful way and it came across so well.
For a deep and emotional read with lots of feel good vibes and laugh out loud bits - where you’re rooting for the character all the way through - this is the one for you. A proper little winter warmer which I’d definitely recommend!

Have read one chapter all the way through but half way into chapter two I have given up. Life is too short.

These characters are ones we've seen a million times before, I think the author was hoping to create a Bridget Jones type persona but that doesn't work in my opinion.
I did enjoy the format of this book, focusing on one Christmas at a time and then working back through the year to fill out the details.
The whole adoption section was shaping up well and I was keen to find out what happened. The conclusion to that story line was very unfulfilling and a waste of time in the book.
The writing is very descriptive, sometimes too much, explaining things that really didn't warrant it.
It's a sugary sweet, predictable story that would do well for a light holiday read.
(Would have been 1 star but I added an extra purely for the character Tom, and his part in the story, actually made me lol).
