Reggie enjoys helping people, leaders, and Christian organizations pursue more intentional lives. He currently serves as the Missional Leadership Specialist for Leadership Network of Dallas, TX. Reggie’s past experience involves over a decade as a denominational executive and leadership development coach. He also served in local congregational leadership for over twenty years, including being the founding pastor of a new church. Reggie has lectured or taught as adjunct faculty for multiple seminaries, including Fuller Theological (Pasadena, CA), Southwestern Baptist (Ft. Worth, TX), Golden Gate Baptist (San Francisco, CA), Trinity Divinity School (Deerfield, IL), and Columbia International (Columbia, SC). In addition, he has served as a consultant to local church, denomination, and para-church leadership teams, as well as seminar developer and presenter for thousands of church leaders across North America. He has also resourced the United States Army Chief of Chaplains Office, Air Force chaplains, and the Air Force Education and Training Command. Reggie’s work also extends to the business sector, including The Gallup Organization.

Reggie has contributed to numerous denominational publications and church leadership journals, including Leadership and Net Results. Reggie’s education includes a B.A. degree from the University of South Carolina and the M.Div. and Ph.D. degrees both from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Reggie and his wife Cathy, have two daughters, Jessica and Susanna, and make their home in Columbia, South Carolina.

Solid message with good illustrations

Get Off Your Donkey (Reggie McNeal, Baker, 2013) is written to challenge people to make their community, country and world a better place to live by ceasing criticism of the problem and by getting off their "donkey" and contributing to the solution. (The story of the title is included in the introduction.)

McNeal argues that in the process of serving others with what a person is best at, an individual also becomes more of him/herself was intended to be. So helping others helps yourself. He demonstrates this truth effectively through a variety of illustrations. Though written for a general audience, McNeal is clear throughout the book about his Christian faith position.

McNeal sprinkles helpful personal questions with space for answers throughout the chapters, that serve both as a review of content and an opportunity for the reader to personally apply the material. As such, the book though written for a general audience, would be beneficial for a variety of group study options. I would recommend Get Off Your Donkey as an easy read and beneficial to the high school or early college student in terms of finding their place in Christian service.

Book Review: "Get Off Your Donkey!"

There have been a recent trend of books released on serving in your own communities, this book may be new, but it's not new to the similar books out there for the Church. Reggie Mcneal's "Get Off Your Donkey" is a familiar story for most Christians, but he manages to present it in a way that captivates the reader, both young and old. I am glad however that he's chosen to write this book, because in a selfish world, we need more reminders of what it means to be a Christian, and that ministry and community improvement is done through selfless serving, that in the end will change who we are. Although I wouldn't jump at the opportunity of recommending it, I do encourage readers to take a look at it, there's more than meets the eye (in this case, it's getting off the donkey).

The title refers to the story about the good Samaritan, the unpopular stranger from a different country who was on a long trip, riding a donkey when he saw a man who had been beaten badly and robbed of everything and left along the side of the road to die. Most people know that several "respectable" people had already avoided doing anything to help the injured man, but the stranger in a strange land stopped to help. Not only did he help with the immediate need, and provide for what was needed in the very near future, but he came back later to see if more help was needed.

This book isn't a retelling of that story. This book is about being that type of person in every aspect of our lives. I am blessed to know people who go out of their way to help others just because the people need help. Even if you only have a little spare time, there might be someone in your community that just needs a phone call from someone, or someone to bring them groceries or deliver food from the food pantry once a week. Or give a ride to church or the doctor's office. Or needs to know that in your community there is a bus that picks up elderly people and take them to the doctor's office and back home. Sometimes all it takes is doing a little research to find out what help is already available.

Christianity is supposed to be faith in action, 7 days a week, and not just paying someone else to do it for you, although sometimes paying someone else to do it is a good choice. The Samaritan paid the innkeeper to look after the injured man that the Samaritan rescued and brought to the inn on his donkey - the Samaritan did not build another inn.

The book is much better than it sounds from my description. Read it for yourself. Then write your own review!

Reggie MacNeal really brings practical ways to be more intentional in your ministry - and in this book he calls everyone to ministry. He makes it very, very clear that ministry is not just for the ordained, but for all of us.

In this book, Reggie lets his humor come through (notably in the telling of the story behind the book's title). Many practical ways to take action. If there is one message in this book, it is that you must take action and he is tremendously effective in getting you to do so. He challenges the reader to literally and metaphorically get of one's donkey.

I happened to read it when I was at a crossroads of how, or if, to get more engaged in working for the coming of the Kingdom and it really got me moving.

People who practise an unbiblical church-centric religion that fails to reflect the heart of God for people have anaemic spiritual lives, and their communities are underserved because of that misplaced institutional religious emphasis, according to Reggie McNeal in this book. The book is essentially an extended study of the parable of the Good Samaritan.

Nearly everyone knows the story from Luke chapter 10 concerning the priest and Levite who passed by the traveller who had been robbed, and the Samaritan with the donkey who stopped to help, but what does the story have to say to the church today? The author notes firstly that the Samaritan had to inconvenience himself, getting down to become engaged with the plight of the robbery victim, and secondly that Jesus instructed us to go and do likewise; not just to agree with the sentiment, but to actually follow the example.

The book goes on to make a number of pertinent observations, including:

* Effective helping often requires partnering with others, just as the Samaritan partnered with the innkeeper
* Doing good to others is good for you, by increasing your self-awareness, improving your connection with people, and helping you become all that God made you to be
* Judgmentalism, prejudice, busyness, distraction, fear, indifference and apathy keep us from helping people that we should help
* When we are too embarrassed to mention Jesus when we are serving people, people are left with a caricature of Jesus painted by some religious nut or poor church experiences or the media
* You serve others most effectively when you find a way of serving that aligns with your passion, talent, personality, and experiences

I did not find any particularly new or startling insights in the book, but the author does provide a short, timely and important reminder of a key aspect of the Christian faith that many seem to have cast aside in a quest for political ascendancy or by withdrawing in reaction to a range of perceived threats to Christianity in the social environment.

I led a Bible study using this book starting the first week it was available. I love Reggie's books and this one came at a great time in the life of our church. Our people have absorbed more Bible knowledge than they'll ever use and that's the problem. We need to look at what God wants us to DO. When I announced our Bible study, "Get Off Your Donkey" we had a great response. Additionally, people began to take up the mantra when they were speaking to others. I can't tell you how many times I heard someone say, "Just like we've been studying, we need to 'get off our donkeys' and do something for others". The message is simple, Jesus said, "Love the Lord your God with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind. ... And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself'". People in the study have been opened to the dual teachings of Matthew 22:36-40. We had some great discussions and they began to share their experiences in helping and sharing God's love with others. I encourage you to read this book, share it, and use it in a Bible Study as I did. It is not academically heavy and relates much-needed truths in a way people can understand. I think we ALL need to "get off our donkeys"
