5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Book, Great Rhymes, and Positive Message
By T & K on March 22, 2021
I see that this book has mostly positive reviews, except for a few that seem to mention that this book promotes conformity or bullying. The way I see it, no child can go through life without encountering bullying in some form. Instead of hiding from it, I believe that this book does a good job (in a simple way, obviously) of showing how bullying can make you feel and how it can happen. More importantly, that you can prevail.

There is nothing in the book that says or implies that the giraffe wanted to learn how to dance because of the bullying. In other words, he was not trying to dance because of peer pressure. He just wanted to dance, and all the other animals that already could dance, didn't give him a chance. The book shows that there really was nothing wrong with the giraffe, he was just too much "in his own head" when attempting to dance. As soon as the cricket changed his perspective and told him how to focus on the music of nature, he found that the ability to dance was within him.

I saw someone make a comment about promoting conformity. Let's take an analogous example of riding a bike. I wouldn't say that keeping your child from learning how to ride a bike is a good example of being a rebel. Encouraging your child not to learn how to ride a bike to "not give in" to bullies is like cutting off your nose to spite your face. Your child learning how to ride a bike might just be the best thing for him/her when they do. I think a much better message is DO learn how to ride a bike. Not because of the bullies, but because of YOU. YOU are capable of anything you want to do, even riding a bike, no matter what anyone else says. And the giraffe was capable of dancing, no matter what everyone said. That's just what he did, because he had always wanted to dance. He achieved self-fulfillment and all the bullies ended up eating their words.

Aside from the message, both my child and I enjoy the colourful pictures, the fun drawings, and the rhyming. Con: the book is a little bit warped, similar to what others have shown.

In conclusion, we have analyzed this short children's book to death - but I just didn't want anyone to miss out on this great story book because they read a few reviews that suggest that it might have a damaging message. I feel it's just the opposite!

Please kindly give my review a helpful vote if you found it useful. Thank you!

2.0 out of 5 stars Book was bent
By Amazon Customer on February 6, 2020
This is my second time buying this book for someone.. but I received it bent! Not sure how it bent anyways as it’s a sturdy board book, little disappointed/ slightly embarrassed as I still gave it as I didn’t give myself enough time to get something else for my friend little one! And I didn’t want to show up empty handed meeting her daughter for the first time!
Great cute book.. but poor quality
