If you are from Western Digital school like me, Gold is your wet dream :)
I bought 3 x 12TB to add to my QNAP nas.
This seller ships in a very fast delay, i bought my drives in 2 'batches' because i first wanted to make sure my nas would recognize them, it is an older model TS-869L. And it does. Both batches arrived within 2-3 days timeframe.
Drives are not much louder than my 5400 rpm RED from 5 years ago. Also i was happy to see these 12TB have 'helioseal' technology which i though was available only on the 16TB models.
Only negative feedback is they have a formatted capacity of 10.6TB not 12TB, but this is a scam started by Maxtor 30 years ago, we won't go there :)

Very happy with my purchase. I know this is overkill for a home NAS but i simply wanted the best.

Great drive. Fastest HDD I've ever used.

Problem is it makes a loud clicking every 5 seconds and is literally driving me crazy. I've been really busy so it took me a couple weeks to get around to installing it. Now it's beyond the Amazon 30 day return window. WD won't help me because it's apparently an "out of region" product.

I can't trust this drive. That clicking is obnoxious and makes me feel like the drive is going to give out any day now. I've never experienced this with any HDD since my first one in 1994. For a top-of-the-line, market-leading product, I'm pretty disappointed and lost respect in Western Digital.

After doing some research I've learned that this is a common issue with these drives. Wish I knew that before throwing away hundreds of dollars.

Picked up this hard drive for my nas server and it does have pretty nice performance. The price was decent, now it sky high, I don't think I will be buying it again. Almost 200$ more now, is pretty crazy if you ask me. EDIT: I just checked and and the price is actually deeeecent. :)..... June5, got my second 16tb drive, Synology is rebuilding it. Disk was checked and showed no errors. These drives should be very reliable in a long run. I'll keep with updates if I get into any issues with them.

Fantastic so far but runs hot!

Great drive so far and what I expect from WD Enterprise drives. Buyer beware, these drives run hot!

I have to run my fans at least 80% to 100% at full load to keep the drive in a good temp range (i.e. high 30s low 40s Celsius), obviously they can operate at higher temps but I want to prolong the life of my drives. I also had to take out two other HDDs because the heat was really bad. This drive was heating up all my other drives even when not in use.

Also Gold drives with 12tb or more have better longevity stats, which actually annoyed me. Enterprise is enterprise why are Gold drive 10TB and lower getting shafted. Dont believe me read their manual.

Still going to keep it but wish I knew about the heat issue. The RED at 5400rpm may be a suitable alternative but is not as fast as a 7200rpm, less transfer life, and warranty as the gold.

I ordered 4 of these from amazone warehouse as open box items, 3 of them showed up defective being that they were 275-300$ off regular price i didnt want to return them to amazon. I contacted WD and they said they would RMA them just put in a request, it said it would be 25$ for instant replacment mailed to me and i figured anthor 50$ for shipping. I contacted amazon to see if they would reimburse me the cost of what i expected to be 75$ in total.

Surprisingly they wouldnt budge on the issue and would only let me return the items. Since 75$ is alot less than 275 x3 + tax i went through with the rma to WD who gave me a prepaid shipping label and waived the 25$ replacment fee because of what i had gone through. (they always do the prepaid shipping label for my contry but the 25$ is for the advanced rma so they ship replacment immediatly instead of waiting until they recieve the defective items.) I have half a dozen of these gold's 20 Red Pro's and a dozen Purple Pro's all though they are all amazing the purples are the best 18tb drives that exist atm with these golds very close behind.

Not sure why a lot of reviews say its noisy. Maybe if you use it in a desktop PC.
But in my NAS Server this drive is as quiet as any other WD Red drives and noticeably faster. I will only be buying these going forward. They cost more, but for a NAS they are perfect and worth the extra $ for their performance and reliability specs. Time will tell as for the reliability though.

Because of the SMR/CMR issues on WD Reds I won't be buying them anymore. Through away 8 new WD Reds (SMR) because the ZFS NAS performance was horrible.

I had underestimated how much storage my Windows Home Server would need for our collection of movies from DVD & Blu-ray, etc. The 6 2TB disks I had in a RAID-5 array weren't enough, as I was rapidly running out of space. So backed up the array, removed the 2TB disks & installed 4 of these 4TB disks & restored my data. They work well. I will order another soon to keep as a cold spare. Still have 2 bays free if I need to add more to my array later.

Arrived on time, well packaged. No problem registering the drives with WD, all drives passed an extended SMART test which took 12+hrs per drive.
I purchased 4 of these drives to run 3 as RAID 5 in my media server and keep 1 as a spare. The drives have been running for 3 days straight now initializing the RAID volume and run about 40c-45c and I do hear them when the environment is quiet, even in an Antec quiet case but not enough to bother me.

So far so good but time will tell.

Arrived in silver bag and cardboard sleeve.. I knew this was a return before even opening it. No visible damage until opened but as expected its been knocked hard enough to smash the corner off. Slipped into my NAS just for laughs really = 520 bad sectors .

A bit noisy though - with audible clonking noises - not advised for where that might matter.

Ignore the poor review on here from the guy that doesn't understand the difference between raw and formatted capacity. For reference 14TB manufacturer raw measurement = 12.73TB formatted without any file system overhead.

I've never heard a HDD which was anywhere near as noisy as this.

Emits a loud hum and vibration at idle. But thats not the worst thing. The worst thing is the constant (every 5 seonds) loud click, so loud in fact, that it makes the entire PC shake!

I've got hard drives that are 15 years old that don't make such a racket!

Why this happens every 5 seconds was a mystery to me. And with no option supplied from WD to change the frequency, i returned this drive as potentially faulty.

I've since found out (not an easy discovery) that this is a 'feature' on all current WD drives. PWL, preventative wear levelling, supposedly to lubricate the mechanism or some such.

Amazon as ever were great and took it straight back.

Having had three of ANOther manufacturer's HDDs grinding themselves to destruction, I thought I would try something a bit more robust and this does not disappoint. the thought of a system and 20-years of work going down the pan scares me silly (yes, I do all the backups, NAS RAID)..
You might get your files back if the main HDD goes down, but setting up a new OS with the grief that entails, means that a few extra quid spent on a more rugged HDD might pay off.
System image and bootable media will help and a regular diagnostic test like WD DataLife Guard helps.
As many have said before, with HDDs, it's not if they fail, but when
