This is a wonderful read. Not just for kids, also a fun read for adults.
A very cool & imaginative blend of detective type stories cut through with fantasy.
The writing is great and the story pulls you in.
A welcome respite during COVID trials.

It's wintertime at Greenglass House. The creaky smuggler's inn is always quiet during this season, and 12-year-old Milo, the innkeepers' adopted son, plans to spend his holidays relaxing. But on the first icy night of vacation, out of nowhere, the guest bell rings. Then rings again. And again. Soon Milo's home is bursting with odd, secretive guests, each one bearing a strange story that is somehow connected to the rambling old house. As objects go missing and tempers flare, Milo and Meddy, the cook's daughter, must decipher clues and untangle the web of deepening mysteries to discover the truth about Greenglass House - and themselves.

I really liked this book. It's a fun mystery. However the twist was very contrived. I think the book would have been better without it.

My 12 year old loved it.

(Since the original review, I am bumping this up to full 4 stars - my twelve year old daughter read it and its one of her favourites.) I'd give this a 3.5 stars. It was a tad slow to get going but proved to be an enjoyable junior sleuth story with a healthy picture of family, a cast of interesting (if somewhat caricatured) characters, a fun and unusual friendship, and a twist ending, all served up in a mysterious, creaky old house with a history, and a freak snow storm that keeps everyone stuck together for a few days before Christmas. Particularly cool was the juxtaposition of real life and role-playing game where often real life is more adventurous. I also liked the element of smugglers, pirates and cat burglars being (among) the good guys and monopoly-holders and bureaucratic regulatory agencies being the bad guys. I liked this enough to try out some of the author's other books and will be recommending it to my 10 and 12 year old kids. An enjoyable holiday read for a snowy Christmas break, or any time of the year for that matter.

right at this end this becomes overt fantasy
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on January 1, 2022Verified Purchase
Milo has been looking forward to a quiet Christmas holidays. Greenglass House, the old hotel where he lives in with his adoptive parents, is always empty over the holidays. But not this year. A steady stream of peculiar guests start arriving. They all have secrets, and he and Meddy decide to solve the puzzles.
There’s a lot of world-building here, but much of the story could take place without it. It isn’t until right at this end that this becomes overt fantasy, and everything is resolved a bit too quickly and easily. But before that, this is an interesting tale of Milo and Meddy working together, and exploit Milo’s deep knowledge of his house, to uncover an old dark secret.

Rich, immersive and very enjoyable

Set in a creaky old house, brimming with interesting characters , lost 'treasure' and intriguing mysteries. The story takes place in the run up to Christmas, and as I read it during a cold and dark January, the story turned out to be a lovely way to capture the cosiness of Christmas. Some twists are clear from the get go, while others surprise along the way. Highly enjoyable, so much so, I've bought the sequel. Enjoy!

like Narnia or Philip Pullman's work

Don't let the 'for kids' tag put you off: like Narnia or Philip Pullman's work, this is every bit as good for adults looking to find a bit of escapism and magic in their lives. Absolutely adored the mix of adventure and heart and a bit of spookiness.
